nope. no point leaving it running if i'm asleep or not at home.
uhh, when you get home its instantly usable. Unless you have a solid state drive, i can see it as a big hassle constantly starting up your computer after an outing.

In the olden times i did. Not anymore though, don't know why i would to be honest. The reason i did it back in the day was for downloads, mostly because internet speed was shit slow, and i guess my patience was very low back then.
But now with a 30Mbit connection compared to 56k, or even a 128kbs line, its not really necessary to leave anything on for over night.
It's off unless I'm using it. I find it odd that people leave them on all the time, you don't leave your car running on the drive just in case you need to go somewhere...

Yes, it doesn't really consume much power, so the effect on the electricity bill is minimal.
Every single bit counts, dude. Just multiply the number of people in the world who do this shit, as well as leaving the lights on and such and I think that number of pointlessly used electricity is huge. And you could also then go and count how much coal/uran etc is used DAILY, just becaus you don't care about "that little ammount" you are using up.
Just saying.
Nope. Neither do I leave the oven on 24/7 or my TV. In fact, I don't even run that shit on Standby power. Environmentally aware, yo!

i should probably start leaving my shower running, too. it's kind of a hassle turning it on and waiting four seconds for it to heat up.

You think you're making a single bit of difference when you turn off your computer? You're not. The only difference is to your bill, and that's all. The energy you use in your lifetime isn't even equal to the energy some Chinese factories go through in a few days. You'r re delusional if you think you are making a difference. That's not to say it's OK and everyone should do it, but there is no use in telling someone that their leaving a computer on 'adds up' cuz it's tilting at windmills.
Ah, ok - I forgot about the "there is someone worse so I can be bad and it doesn't matter" logic, my fault.
Wait, you guys completely turn it off? I just have it sleep after a while which takes hardly any power as far as I know. Turning it off always seemed the same as unplugging your TV so it doesn't leech power, yeah it saves power but not enough to be worth it. A few extra bucks a month is worth the hours that I would loose.
Turn it off when I'm done with it for the day, so, usually just before I go to bed. No point in wasting the power after all.
No. It's a waste of electricity and probably not good for the thing to be running all the time. Even if it's only in sleep mode or something. Let your machines get some rest! Then they will take pity on us when they conquer the world!
Well I guess this poll explains this: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_usa_per_per-energy-usage-per-person
If I'm downloading stuff then I will leave it on, but if I'm going to be away and don't have anything to download then I turn it off.
I used to leave my PC on 24/7, but that was when I had hardwood floors. Now that I live in a place with carpet I turn it off at night simply so it isn't sucking up carpet dust as I sleep. I still have to dust it out on a regular basis, but those 8-10 hours of off time each night means I don't have to do it so often.
I do have dust filters on my intake fans, but the finer dust still gets through and besides the filters themselves have to get cleaned regularly.
I only turn it off if I'm going to be away from home for 12 or more hours (during the day) or if I'm going to be on vacation. Windows is set up to install updates, defrag hard drives, and run virus scans throughout the night anyway so leaving it on is useful. The power consumption is a little unfortunate (my main system burns about 200W at idle according to my UPS) but isn't much different from a few light bulbs.
There's no point in leaving it on when I'm asleep or not home unless I'm downloading something.
People who do leave it on all the time are... sub-human creatures.
