I remember a rumour around the production of Spider-Man 2 that they were going to introduce Jake Gyllenhaal as Ben Reilly, the Scarlet Spider, who would replace Tobey Maguire as the lead in the series... but I always thought that was silly because Ben Reilly is a clone of Peter Parker, and as you pointed out, Jake Gyllenhaal does not look exactly like Tobey Maguire.

I remember a similar rumor but it was that Jake Gyllenhaal would replace Tobey Maguire because Maguire had injuried his back badly while filming another movie (Seabiscuit). The Spiderman sequel was on a schedule and the producers weren't sure if his back would heal in time and then when healed if he'd be up to the activeness of the role.
