Always been intrigued by the rapidly advancing state of graphics on its never ending quest for "photo realism". For me it all started the day I walked outside in the first unreal game to the, at the time, unbelievable vista that was in front of my eyes. Still get goose bumps whenever a new games shows me something that I've never seen before or thought was possible. As long as there are new Quakes, Dooms, Oblivions, and Crisis's in the world I will always be a diehard PC gamer. Not that I won't appreciate the gameplay I get on my 360, ps3, and wii, but breathtaking visuals will always be the drug that keeps me coming back. On that note hurry up and get here Elder Scrolls Skyrim.

I hope games stop trying to get more real, and instead focus on using what we have in a stylish way.
New to the Giantbomb community, seems like a really great site, definitely not a troll. And the visuals are just what keep me coming back (and buying $400 video cards). I also appreciate story and art style. Played Oblivion for hundreds of hours, the graphics are only what first drew me in.
I thought this was someone selling sex for money towards a new graphics card. I am now sorely disappointed, and sexually dissatisfied.

It still looks bizzare when two characters make physical contact. One more generation of hardware might be what we need.

Noire and Rage coming out - games that each push the visuals further towards photorealism.
@ViciousReiven: Be discreet man! Posting on a public forum is a certain way to get your service site shut down! Use some euphemisms!God's sake, this isn't Craigslist!
@Dtat: Lol the cutscene at the beginning of the last level of TFU was pretty bad.
Yes I remember seeing a tiny screenshot from Unreal and how it looked with a Voodoo 2 in a newspaper. However when I could afford my Voodoo 2 it was already old and it was all about TNT2 graphics cards =/
I don't really need games to look better, they look good enough for me on 360.However I said the same thing when I played Dreamcast and now that looks rubbish. When they finally do release a new console I'll probably think the 360 looks like shit. graphics is like TV size. You are satisfied with what you have until you get something better, then you get used to that and what you had before seems like shit, and repeat. Remember when a 21" PC monitor was considered huge? and when 32" on a TV was the biggest you could get without going into rear projection stuff?
" @crusader8463 said:They should just flat-out not hug in games. It never looks real because there's always this distance between them to avoid clipping in cutscenes, but instead it just looks awkward, like they really, really don't want to be close to each other." "I definitely hear you dude and I would admit every now and then I want to see something that blows me away visually. People seem to forget that having such a preference does not automatically mean you have no care for artstyle or story or the game mechanics themselves, which isn't true at all. I wouldn't buy a game with crazy graphics but unplayable controls or a horrendous story now. I have Crysis Warhead as an example of a beautiful game with pretty good controls and a story which isn't horrible at least, though it is middling.
Great visuals don't make a bad game good, but bad graphics can certainly diminish an otherwise solid game.
Recently I've noticed that animation has an enormous impact on how good a game looks, particularly in regards to character animation. Indeed, I'd say that animation is far more important than texture resolution or polygon counts. How a character moves has more to do with its believability than it's detail.
As an example, take the stylized opening of Casino Royale, where they took live-action choreography and simplified them into something akin to cell-shading. The way they move makes them believable, even though they are basically just blobs of color in human shape. It's the best example of the pure power of character animation. I know they are rotoscoped human beings, but the point is that it is the movement, not the detail, that reads as human.
Nyyeereraaaahhghghh Graphics :)
I used to get chills from seeing cool graphics when I was a kid, when I watched the Crysis 2 trailer that Area5 produced I got chills when I saw that giant alien tear through the wall or whatever it did. What matters to me most is good art direction and art asset quality, and sometimes I get ... I shouldn't say this... slightly emotional seeing how far games have come.
I once had sex with a graphics whore. She had bump mapping; I now have to rub a medical cream on my penis to keep the swelling down.
" Ps3 games give the PC a run for it's money these days. "Hey, can I join you under your bridge? Its rainin fire out here.
