I already know Paik, Mogwai, and Kinski, Racer X, and "The Target is You" album from Love of Diagrams. I've been into them, because it helps when I'm revising.
Any recommendations? Can even be just albums that were instrumental. Can be any sub-genre of rock.
Great Instrumental rock bands/albums?
how about Hot Rats by Zappa?
the second song on the album has some vocals on it, but the rest is strictly instrumental.
@Thrillhouse87: So awesome. Frank Zappa has a couple of strictly instrumental albums that rock.
Zombi is a cool space rock instrumental band
I guess phish are sort of instrumental since they do a lot of improvisation during songs and have quite a few instrumental songs
Thats just rock, but obviously if your looking for instrumental albums, there are tons of incredible jazz albums
Some of their songs do.@FancySoapsMan: broken social scene has lyrics?
They don't usually make sense but I suppose they still count as lyrics.

I mean, if it just means that if they don't make sense or whatever, might as well include Sigur Ros in it too
It's a little old, but "The Best of Booker T & the M.G.s"

Fun Fact: The bass player in Lightning Bolt works at Harmonix.
I'd check out Miles Davis' seminal album Bitches Brew.
Uh that has vocals lol. Nah, just kidding, they sound great. @Jothel said:
Oh wow, a solo/side project from prog rock heavyweights. I remember really liking "State of Grace" when I heard it last year.Liquid Tension Experiment
That song almost makes me cry :(
@AssInAss: Afro Celt Sound System is more electro, but it's sick as hell. If you're willing to take a risk on some instrumental stuff that's not so much rock, I'd recommend Boards of Canada, Amon Tobin, and most importantly Michael Hedges.

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot Earth, someone above posted them. Awesome band

@chrissedoff: Fuck yes! Earth and Sunn O))) are awesome, although I think Sunn hasn't done to much interesting since Black One. Dylan Carlson continues to dominate as the best act on Southern Lord. I wish Khanate was still around.
Alice is the best song Sunn o)))'s ever done actually (Altar, however, is their best album, and both are after Black One) :P and boris is the best act on southern lord, though earth is quite good

@Laketown: I didn't think Boris was on Southern Lord anymore? They didn't put out Attention Please and Heavy Rocks through them.
oh yeah, forgot about that; they're still listed as being a part, there's no reason they can't choose other distributors for certain albums I guess?
but if they aren't, the best band on southern lord is Om.

@Laketown: Totally didnt' like Altar, I still have the vinyl but I'm probably going to be selling it soon. That said Boris definitely balls out, the new Heavy Rocks album was especially sweet and their live shows are not to be missed. And actually my favorite Sunn album is La Mort Noir Dans Esch / Alzette which did come after Black One but was the tour for the album so still kind of the same. }:-P Glad there are other fans on this site.
I think the best new boris album was the one they only released in Japan (new album)
Damn, Southern Lord has an insane roster. Wolves in the Throne Room is probably my personal favorite.@PeasantAbuse said:

@Krampus: Might as well sell it if you don't like it, Sunn 0))) albums tend to go for a pretty decent amount of cash (which is why I don't have any on vinyl). What color do you have?
Perhaps more metal than rock, but Mastodon released an instrumental version of their Crack The Skye album. It's amazing.
(Though I'm upset that what I've heard of their new album is a bit shit.)
