The whole movie costed half a billion dollars to make and so far it has only grossed 27 million.....damn I hope it starts making more because it looks like an interesting movie and JC wants to make 2 sequels if it's successful.
Has Avatar flopped?
Wow, half a million dollars? By the way -- it cost less than 300 million to develop. 27 million on Friday, dude. Just in case you meant half a billion, not even close." Yeah it was an awesome movie, I thought it was gonna suck so much ass but it was fuckin cool... then again I saw it in 3D.... but anyways... It was great.
But... I wouldn't like to see another movie like that... it just... no.

My link says less than that. Regardless, production wise, it's less than $250 million.
Hell, what would they be doing with another $250+ million?
Link:
The budget for “Avatar,” a Fox spokesperson bluntly told TheWrap this week, “is $237 million, with $150 million for promotion, end of story.”
Presuming Fox’s $387 million compounded figure is accurate, the film should have no problem getting into the black. A $400 million score at the worldwide box office -- not a stretch by any means for a film of this caliber -- will provide a revenue base that, when combined with home video sales, TV and other licensing, should add up to a profit.

Actually no, it would be "On its opening day," indicating it has possession. Think about it, "it's" would be: "On it is opening day." That doesn't make sense. If 'it's" doesn't work, it has to be "its."" @WoolyAbyss said:

Sorry to be the dick.
Costed isn't a word. I hope it flops just so nobody trusts Cameron with money and he has to make good movies. That being said though I kind of hope it makes trazillions (Irony!) of solid gold bars stuffed with diamonds so I can enjoy a life time's worth of retarded movies vomiting into my eyeballs.
Having said that I haven't seen the movie yet but my inner retard is touching himself in public while he drools on himself so I'm quite confident in the retardation of this movie.
I live in San Francisco and dislike all the gang bangers coming over the bridge from Oakland to see big blockbuster films, so I chose never to go see movies right away during the first couple weekends, let alone opening day.
The last time I went to the Metreon on opening day, some dude decided to pickup his phone during I think it was Beowulf, and do a drug deal with potty language and all. This right in the middle of the film, for about 3 minutes, in front of like 100 people where no one even said anything to him. Another time, some kid shot some other kid on the escalators because he was walking to slow, during crazy opening day. There's been more, where one even includes a drink dude, but suffice to say I'm pretty much done with opening day/seeing movies in a fast manner in general.
I will see it in a week or 2 though, hopefully in IMAX 3D... just when all the gang bangers and punk ass kids aren't around to annoy me.

It's been out for like a day and it hasn't made as much as sequels in already established franchises or star vehicles like I Am Legend. What a failure, etc.
If Avatar can't make back the money they spent on the movie, it will just prove that there are reasonable limits that should be put in place on movie budgets. Considering how much hype there was for the movie, and that it's probably the best "blockbuster" movie that's come out in awhile (based on hearing reviews and the sheer number of people I know of who have gone to see it), if it does end up a monetary flop, they deserve it for going overboard.

I doubt it will flop... and even if it does I doubt that would really have any effect on Cameron wanting to make another one.... the director of the biggest money making movie in history has a certain amount of freedom and if he wants to make another film set in that same universe I'm pretty certain he will.. flop or not.
and seriously... it was sold out when I went to see it... the reviews+ good word of mouth... theres no way it will flop.
The article doesn't mention distribution or IMAX film production costs. I'm sure if one took these into consideration, the OP's guesstimate at the cost would be close to correct.
But it's not a flop. Not only did it make $27 million its first day, but it wasn't panned by critics and has James Cameron's name attached to it. It won't be a Dark Knight, but it'll probably recoup all costs.

Not record breaking when it comes to opening weekend, but 90% of movies would kill for those numbers.

Do you read any of the posts to your topic? The movie cost $250 mill not 500." $500 mil is going to be pretty hard to top off. I hope it will. "
How about you read some posts instead of trying to fixing grammatical errors.
"Dude, if that's a South Park reference I totally love you right now."
- $230 million to make the movie.
- $150 million in marketing and advertising costs.
- James Cameron.
- Rabid sci-fi fans.
- Not panned by the critics.
- ???
- Profit!
Exit tracking is off the charts. This movie is gonna have legs. A 60-80 million opening weekend for a non franchise, no big name, three hour long movie is pretty great.
I saw it today. It's not a mind-blowing milestone like Star Wars or The Matrix but it's amazingly entertaining. I was always engaged and never felt the runtime dragging on me.
" I doubt it'll flop, from what my friends have told me it's a great movie. "This is unfortunantly not indicative of how much money it'll make.
In terms of good movies, it seems to not have flopped, but I still don't understand how they're going to get regular movie-goers sold on blue dudes.

This movie was supposed to be the big nerd fest film of the year and there have been no session sell outs at all in any cinema where I live. I don't know if this is true of the movie in general but I think it would be fair to call it a little disapointing so far with it's cash take.
