Can you even buy 720p TVs anymore? Also there is no reason not to buy a 1080p tv.
I wanna buy a new TV. 720p or 1080p?
I plan on upgrading my TV's size from 24 in. to 32 in. to get ready for the next-gen consoles and am torn between if the new TV should be 720p or 1080p. My current TV outputs 1080i I think and is a SONY Bravia if that means anything. Mainly I'm just wondering if 720p is fine for a TV that size. Also is the amount of Hz important? I plan on playing close to the screen as it will be in my room.
"Clearly, there is no noticeable difference between 720p and 1080p" ...said every dumb-fuck video game journalist ever, over the past two weeks.
For an actual explanation of the difference, see this post.
Also, see this image:
The size of the image itself? That's the difference between 720p and 1080p.
This isn't console war BS, either. Forza will be in 1080p, as no doubt will many other awesome looking Xbox One titles. No matter which next-gen console you're leaning towards eventually picking up, don't miss out on the full capabilities of the system.

What the heck happened to the post order in this thread? It's now showing me as the second reply, and that's not right at all.
Honestly, you should use 720p over 1080i when it comes to your current TV; selecting it on your PS3 or 360 (unless you can go even higher on 360), but when purchasing a new TV, then the obvious choice is the one with a higher resolution. It does depends on size, sure, but still, you should go with the 1080p.
Get a 1080p TV. It's cheaper than ever and makes all the difference. If you live in America, you can find a good 32'' 1080p for around 200-250, and if you wait until Black Friday they'll probably be down to 150-200.
I'm not sure if you can even buy a new TV of that size using 720p. Even if you could there's no reason why should. I can't imagine a nice 1080p 32" TV costing more than 500 bucks nowadays.
I just bought a pretty top of the line 47" LG LCD a few months back and that set me back 900 euros. This new one uses way less electricity than my old 26" 720p LCD.
@athadam: That was the plan. I've been checking prices on Amazon and some of those deals are pretty good, but I bet they'll be better on Black Friday.
During a non-sale period, I bought a Vizio 39" 1080p TV for about $380. Considering you can get something in the mid to high 30'' range in 1080p for between $300-400, I'd go with 1080p by default and let size and features (Smart TV, etc) be the determining factor. When it's within $100 and you're going to be using this with new consoles for years to come, go ahead and get something you can work with.
If you are shopping around for a TV for gaming, here is a chart that shows the latency on different TVs. http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/ Most TV reviews don't take lag into account. For instance, the Panasonic ST60 is usually considered the best tv you can buy but it has terrible lag (~60ms).
I have the Sony 3d Display that I got off of C-List for $150. It does 1080 and 120hz and the 3d works pretty well although it wasn't much of a selling point
I've seen some cheap yet great quality 1080p TV's. If you can afford it, GET IT. If you are limited on cash and your buying a 40" or less then the 720 will be fine.
1080p. You can still get 720p, but 1080p is the way to go for games. Generally the 1080p version of the same TV will be about $60-$100 more than the 720p variant.
I was looking at TVs today actually. For a 1080p 32" inch Vizio or Samsung it was around $400. For every 5 inches you add the price seemed to go up about $60 or so on the models I was looking at.
@mendelson9: Thanks for the heads up. I'll use the chart come Black friday.
