If you could stop one assassination...
The U.S. wanted him either exterminated, alive for questioning and trial, or to just flat-out disappear. The CIA directed the operation that led to his capture, and even Johnson's comments about Che's "execution" were pretty half-hearted." @jakob187 said:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTRRr7QDGIw You were saying? It's not unknown that the CIA had directed the assassination of Che Guevara. An assassination, by definition, is a targeted killing of a public figure. "" @jakob187 said:
Not assassinations. Sorry if I sound like a dick. "" Che Guevara. "
Moreover, the Bolivian army had been ordered to make it look as though Che had gone down in a battle of gunfire rather than an execution, which is the reasoning for the shots to the legs and arms that he took. Unfortunately for the Bolivian army, they didn't perform the execution in a relatively low-key and private place, as the gunshots were heard by others that also saw the body being taken out.
Mind you, I wasn't there, so I only know what I've read over the years. However, a lot of this stuff has been public information for many years now. I got interested in Che Guevara after watching The Motorcycle Diaries, as it made me realize I didn't know shit about him but saw his image everywhere.
Personally, I didn't believe in his politics - a socialist with anarchist tendencies. However, the man was an incredibly charismatic and respected leader, which is more than can be said for most leaders. He did have some good ideals, but most of those went away once he met Castro.
Regardless, I think if he hadn't been assassinated, it would've led to a very different outlook on Fidel Castro's life and ambitions. Once Che died, though, Castro's ideals of corruption and socialism took quite a big turn to tyranny.
" Probably JFK. Then again, his popularity might not be nearly as high if he stayed in office longer. Being in office longer could spell some margin of errors. "The Bay of Pigs Fiasco was certainly an error.
Malcolm X.
I'm not particularly a fan, but I have my reasons.

WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT BEING STUPID
Anwar Sadat. The one man in the Middle East with the drive and foresight to actually attempt a real peace with Israel, and show the muslim world that the world will not end if you talk to the Jews. If he is not assassinated the Middle East peace process probably would have been sucessful in the late 1970's.
It really came down to the fact that Israel survived against, and DESTROYED three larger muslim armies, including Egypt, AT THE SAME TIME! Sadat knew that the only way to save face in the international community and specificly the United Nations, was to make a very real effort at peace.
Sadly the religious extremists in that region had....other plans. And now Israel doesent believe anything a Muslim nation says just because they have been sucker punched one too many times. People get upset that Israel makes preemptive attacks or airstrikes for their own national security, but honestly, can you blame them??
@ArchScabby:
Dont you mean Laura Palmer? Like Twin Peaks. Which is directed by the madman himself, David Lynch.
"Who is David Palmer?"

Probably Jesse James...To stop that terrible terrible film from being made...
Malcolm X. Who wouldn't want to see a 80 year old Malcolm X sitting on the couch chatting it up with Tyra?
" I don't think messing with history is such a good idea. Though I would go with Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This!
To preserve his mustache. "

This! Possibly stopping 2 world wars would also be a good reason though.

It seems like both sides refuse to make peace, one way or the other, because extreme minorities are unwilling to be peaceful. I can and do blame them both for perpetuating the situation.
It's hard to say what assassination I'd stop. There's just so few people who actually matter to me who got themselves killed, and as often as not being assassinated is one of the things that makes them famous. I'd probably pick some near-nobody, the sort of person who would make a big difference if they hadn't been killed sooner.
As for Ferdinand, I happened to see info on him in a documentary last night, and stopping his assassination might have brought about some change. He was a radical who favored peace with the Serbians (supposedly). Naturally, as the soon-to-be-emperor, an extremist Serbian group took the opportunity to take him out. From there, Europe just destroyed itself. I tend to favor the summation that, sooner or later, the whole place was going to collapse anyway.
Maybe I'd go for Julius Caesar. Rome's economy was largely built on expansion and conquest, and with the death of Caesar all further conquest came to an end. He was actually on his way to conquer Persia (the nearest thing to a rival Rome could find).

assassinate (əˈsæsɪˌneɪt) | |

1. | to murder (a person, esp a public or political figure), usually by a surprise attack |
2. | to ruin or harm (a person's reputation, etc) by slander |
This. He killed himself. No assassinations.
Rewriting history is a terrible idea. Its a terrible idea now, and it was a terrible idea when they sang it during the Duck Tales theme lyrics. Maybe thats where kids thought it was a cool thing to do. But ill tell you right now, its not.

Imagine if world war 1 hadn't have happened though. No World War 2, no collapse of the British Empire, no German republic, no soviet union, the us wouldnt be the only superpower, might not even be a superpower. No United Nations, no European Union
You could argue that all those things could happen. That all empires have to fall so Britains empire was doomed at the start. That Germany might have became a republic anyway, that the US becomes a super power (to eventually fall like Britain) that an alternative to the United Nations could be set up ect ect.
Basically WW1 was just rehearsal for WW2
