How about going back to the old school.

Check out some Beatles albums to get ready for the new game.

Check out Ray Charles,  the beginnings of soul music.

Check out Django Reinhardt, he popularized gypsy guitar.

As for what I'm listening to lately, it's been a lot of Phish and Grateful Dead.  I'm going to see Phish in Chicago on Tuesday and I'm pretty pumped.

" hip-hop :

Aesop Rock
Cannibal Ox
Hieroglyphics

metal:
Blotted Science (all instrumental)
Spastic Ink (mostly instrumental)
Necrophagist
Gorod "
Great suggestions.
to the instrumental metal (if you're into that sort of thing) I would add Sleep Terror.

For hip-hop I would add Immortal Technique

And for the random bands that I like I would like to add:
He Is Legend (Post-hardcore)
This Will Destroy You (instrumental rock, along the lines of Explosions In the Sky)
Dustin Kensrue (Folk)
Tom Waits (Sort of rock sort of experimental)
Jack Conte (Experimental)
Animal Collective (Indie Rock)
and St. Vincent (Indie pop-ish) (Thanks Bruce!)

Radiohead. They changed the way I look at music, and I don't mean that in a "they are just that good" kind of way. I literally mean their arrangements, lyrics, time signatures, everything - if you get into them enough you will see what I mean. They have been my favorite band for the past 6 years.

Also:
Sigur Ros
Mum
Beck
The Arcade Fire
The Museum Pieces
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (Listen to "The Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth")
Boards of Canada
David Bowie has some pretty wicked stuff
early Peter Gabriel ("Moribund Burgermeister", FTW)
early Genesis (With Peter Gabriel lol)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
A Silver Mt. Zion
Led Zeppelin
Mogwai
Muse (Actually listen to their albums - not just the stuff from guitar hero like 90% of the people who know of Muse)
Mr. Bungle
Nick Drake
 Neutral Milk Hotel
Philip Glass
Pink Floyd
Protest the Hero
Placebo
St. Vincent (LOL thanks Bruce!)
Sufjan Stevens
Tool
Wintersleep (Listen to "Nerves Normal, Breath Normal" RIGHT THE HELL NOW, they're a local band from where I'm from)

That's some damn good Hip-Hop right there, especially Nas and Wu.

Check out the band 'Maximum the Hormone'. They're a Japanese rock band that are pretty mind blowing. They did the 'Death Note' anime's soundtrack.

Dance Gavin Dance's older stuff like the EP and their first album. The self-titled is ok, but it has a new lead singer.
