A bit of overkill on the ram, unless you plan on using that bad boy for some intense modeling/3d rendering/photo editing. Besides that it is a thing of beauty. I love how organized everything is on the inside, there is nothing worse then see a poorly organized computer with loose wires everywhere for no reason.

24gigs is a lot for nothing. i don't even think that games require 3gigs of ram yet. i think you could have saved a couple of dollars and just went with like 4gigs just to be safe. so how much was all of that?

Nope, I use every bit of it.  I do alot of HD encoding and animation so this was worth it.  All told I spent about $1400 on additional parts.  I already had the sound, video, power supply, 1x 1.5TB black drive, Pioneer DVD and cooler from previous machine.  I got a 7.7 on the windows experience test if that makes a difference.

memory got during newegg sale bought 1 12gb kit for 180 and bought the other during a promo coupon thing for 150.
processor i got through a special intel retail channel purchase for $250 - quite a deal there.

While I can understand 7TB + 120GB of HDD space, seriously? 7TB? I'm also not a fan of WD HDDs; they seem to die awfully quick on me.

Instead of burning a retarded amount of money on RAM, you probably should have dropped for SLI'd Nvidia 500 series cards.

Other than that, that's an absolutely ridiculous setup.

@Aus_azn: I have had better luck with the WD drives than others (knock on wood).  I do have a Green drive acting as backup just in case and I will be assembling a NAS box next with 8TB of storage for everyone on the network. :)

@animateria: i'll post another pic showing the cable routing behind the MB tray.  The cables at the bottom are bundled up and zip tied bc they will never be in use bc they are all molex connectors and 2 additional PCI-E power plugs.

Does bottlenecking work the other way round? If I tried to put another 18GB of DDR3 into my PC I'm fairly sure it would tell me to fuck off.

@Afroman269: i think, i may have to go back and tally up my spendings... - the cpu was a deal through intel's retail channel and only costed 250.
my post above describes what i had already prior to building this one.

Good deal. I got a new ASUS mobo, E5200, 2GB ram all for 180$ (including tax) in March.
It's not crazy high end, but it plays games completely fine (mainly TF2).

You got a nice machine there.

Dragon Age II, The Witcher 2, Crysis 2, Mass Effect 3, and TES: Skyrim will all run incredibly on it.

Edit: Diablo III, Torchlight 2, Portal 2. . .

nice rig , a real bargain for $1400!

all it would need to be completely nuts is for you to get some super highend graphics cards later when the 28 nm starts tapping out.

well , no specs are out yet , but yeah , if anyone has a chance of running those games it would be this rig , even if its not as nuts in the gaphics compartment as the others.

I have the exactly same psu and mobo as you.

Someone wants to know my opinion on it? Well the gpu is the same power as a hd 5870 and everything else is overkill. You don't need a six core i7 or that much ram or that many hardrives unless you are running it in raid. You could of got away with using a fast SSD drive as your main, then use your other WD black hardrives as you games folder and green drives as your storage folder. In this case even one 2tb is enough for storage. You could of invested in something more powerful like a gtx 570, or gtx 580. Unless this pc is for 3d rendering or professional video editing.

Hey it's the op's money, if he wants to waste it like that, sure let him. I would of done alot of things differently.

Edit: wait your not using that gpu anymore, reverting back to an old one?

How about more like mine?
  •  i7 950

  • Asus Sabertooth Mobo
  • GTX 580 (EVGA)
  • WD Caviar Green 1TB (storage)
  • OCZ 60GB SSD (boot)
  • Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
  • Win 7 64bit
  • CoolerMaster HAF 912 Case

All bought brand new, built from scratch for just £1350 :D (a few months ago)

Cables aren't connected up here, but this is the best pic I got during the build (dark room :\ )

@SamSharp505: Haha ;) Yeahhh I can get 60fps on very high sometimes... But Crysis isn't all that well optimised I don't think, the average I get is 45 ish. But it still runs smooth as hell. Anything else though runs 100+, which is real nice ;)

And building was so fun, I had never built a rig before and had money saved from a job, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did! I really want to build another one now haha. Did you enjoy yours? That's a good spec you got for that price!

Yeah it was great fun :D I got to build two technically, me and my friend had money saved up and had spent a while picking out parts so we hepled build each others, the computers are pretty much twins apart from GPU, he's running an 8800GTX for now. I'm like that too haha I want to create a new one and pick the parts and stuff again, just was really fun. :)

Nice. I'm jealous about the cost of the cpu, regardless of app. And I will simply take your word the memory is appropriate, as would be the 6 core cpu  then. What I do like is that everything is a bit over the norm for what is needed, what my Dad used to call overshooting a bit to in effect truly meet ones goal. Often-times what is minimum needed really isn't enough when stressed or unperceived conditions arise.

The other thing is that besides the practicalility (and limits) of using some used components in terms of cost, you also were able to make special buys. That makes the 1400.00 impressive but probably not normally achievable. I'm not criticizing, just noting.

That's a nice rig and no not in any way "overkill" as some people are saying.
If the idiots could actually read you're going to be using it for Editing and 3D rendering and stuff like that so nothing about it is overkill.
What's overkill is the money these peoples parents wasted on schooling their kids since they didn't learn how to read :/

A 120gb SSD at a cheap price runs over 200 so you must have got a good sale there in addition to the cpu.  At 120gb you should just use it as your main drive and just use a TB drive to install all the other crap that doesn't have to be a part of the windows installation though.  Personally I do in fact do video editing and produce 1080p mp4 videos and I even I will tell you 8 is enough, 16 is maybe taking it a little far but okay I can see it, 24 though?  Absolute overkill unless you are a professional being paid to do video/graphics editing as a job and even then it isn't "required".  Sound card = waste of money unless you do recording which if you do you bought the wrong sound card anyway, I guess it is okay if you are running a REAL speaker system with your pc.  Graphics don't listen to the haters your card is fine, crysis at max is not the measuring stick unless you are measuring epeen size.  With that card almost any game on the market today you will be able to max it and forget about it with no fps issues.   Hard drives?  Overkill again.  A single 1tb drive with the SSD is enough really.  Heck add on the second if you have to but you are running like a SSD and 4 more drives besides?

As for cost?  Well easily over 2000 when you factor in all the components you "already owned".

@Chavtheworld: 1350 pounds and you haven't even factored in the PSU or your drives yet and one pound is like 1.5 american dollars to begin with.  In other words your rig cost around 2100-2200 dollars and you skimped on the case, possibly the psu, and the memory.  Sabertooth is a great mobo for the money though.  My point?  You beat our OP on graphics card and arguably mobo, but pretty much lose to him or only equal him on everything else.  In general your pc's cost about the same but his will be the better overall performer.

XFX Radeon 5850 1GB. Awful graphics card change to 580gtx
24GB Ram. Thats too much seriously...
Intel Core i7-970. Sandy bridge is better.
Cooler Master Hyper 212. Noctua or Corsair much better.
It's an ok gaming rig nothing special.
