Sup duders. I'm finding myself in a bit of a dilemma. So my girl and I are trying to figure out a quality horror movie to watch together but I'm getting hung up on her one stipulation: No gore. I like to consider myself a purveyor of cinema. It's pretty rare that I won't see a film, the only exception being when it just absolutely doesn't have any value to it at all. I can stomach laughably horrible acting if it is just that, laughably bad, and other things of that nature. The issue that I'm running into is that even with all of the movies that I've seen I'm realizing that all of the movies I'm thinking of from my pool of horror movies all have a degree of gore to them.

So my question to pose to you is this: What are some (preferably semi-recent) decent horror movies that still get your heart pumping and have a good scare factor but manage to avoid the admittedly cheap gore scares? I tend to trust the opinions of other viewers over those of cynical critics like that arrogant douchebag Ebert.

Oh, and "inb4"

Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2 are pretty damn good, you should also check out The Last Exorcism.

When she says "no gore", how deep does that go? There are plenty of non-gory horror films that still have blood here and there, or "corpsey" corpses (as opposed to "guy lying down with pale makeup on").

The Blair Witch Project. It's about three students who visit a village in the countryside in order to film a documentary about a witch which is said to live in a nearby forest. The movie is shot entriely from the perspective of one of the students' handcam.

Ok, they're in the woods, the camera keeps on moving, i think they're looking for some witch or something, i wasn't listening. Nothings happening, nothings happening, something about a map, nothings happening, its over. A lot of people in the audience look pissed.

@dudeglove: Hitchcock (hehe, cock) made thrillers, some of the best thrillers ever, but still, they aren't horror movies, nor are they scary, but they are exciting.

I remember watching a film when I was a kid called Apt Pupil (I think) and it scared the fucking shit out of me. But then, when I say kid I mean like 7.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apt_Pupil_(film) Yeah there it is. Although it is called a psychological thriller on there, but then those are generally scarier than 'horrors'.

Yeah, I think the issue is that most of the stuff that is non-gory is probably going to fall along the lines of thriller more than horror.  The Ring might be the exception (although, when they find the dead bodies, some of the more squeamish might consider that gory). I'd probably recommend Stir of Echoes for a thriller/horror film.  If she is very skiddish, might make her jump, and the kid in it is creepy/weird as hell.

Look into Thrillers or Psycological Horror films.
Like Paranormal Activity, The Ring, What Lies Beneath, Stigmata, The Haunting and the American Haunting are ones that come to mind.

Most of them have probably been mentioned, I could probably remember a few more as I've been struck down with the whole no gore thing by people before.
WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T WATCH CARRIERS.
It's pretty bad.

YES! I second this. Insidious is a great haunted house flick that goes slightly off the rails towards the end but is creepy as fuck nonetheless. I highly recommend it.

I've got to put in my support for The Blair Witch Project also, it's a great movie that still holds up pretty well.

The original Black Christmas by Bob Clark. It's one of the most suspenseful and genuinely creepy horror flicks of all time and it's not gory.

@ShaggE: Yeah, I guess I should have qualified the definition of gore a little more clearly. Basically from what I gather she means no excessive blood, severed limbs/bodily mutilation, or things of that nature. If it isn't something that would make it for a tv edit it's likely too much for her. Point of reference: (minor spoilers) Even the scenes in The Haunting in Connecticut with characters carved into the body and the box of eyelid clippings were enough to be a bother. She can be pretty squeamish.

That is unbelievable.

Admittedly I missed Drag Me to Hell. What makes it unbelievable that it was rated PG-13?

I appreciate the suggestions so far guys. I'll be sure to check them all out.

A couple of really good movies that also happen to be unsettling/freaky are The Orphanage and A Tale of Two Sisters. Both have some scenes of violence (Orphanage only barely), but neither is outright gory or indulgently violent.

What is your classification of gore?  Internal organs becoming external, excessive blood, tell me what I have to work with.
Here are some from the top of my head
Open Water - A couple are stranded in the middle of the ocean
1408 - Based on a Stephen King short story about a haunted hotel room and is PG-13.
CreepShow- From the 80's but most of the gore is off camera or done in silhouette also written by Stephen King
Pontypool - A fun little indie zombie movie with a neat take on the genre and features very little violence
The Last Exorcism - a faux documentary about an exorcism that is surprisingly creepy

Edit- Even though Drag Me to Hell is PG-13 it may constitute as gory.

I remember that movie being particularly disturbing and I'm pretty sure it wasn't light on the gore. Or maybe I just don't it remember well enough?

It's easy to remember it as being gory, but it was all unidentifiable fluids that don't technically count as gore (except for the nosebleed scene). Raimi can be quite crafty.

As for my suggestion, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. No joke, there's very little overtly graphic content there.

Lake Mungo is a pretty good fake documentary about a ghost, then gets a little more bizarre. No gore as I can remember, some creepy photos though.

Cloverfield was pretty decent, was a nice spin on the whole big monster attacks the city. It wasn't terribly gory if i remember correctly. Has been a while since I've seen it.
