I gotta go with waffles.
Pancakes or Waffles?
Pancakes; waffles want too much fancy equipment to suit me.
Of course, this is a trivial non-distinction, since it's really a question of "How do you prefer your batter cooked and shaped?".
I thought i remember hearing alton brown say that there is a difference between pancake batter and waffle batter.
Waffles are definitely my preferred breakfast item to order, but if I'm making them then I'm usually lazy and go with pancakes. Honestly, the waffle iron is a bitch to clean.
@underworld2086: There is a difference. If you buy a package of pre-made mix (like from william-sonoma or gourmet chef) they usually have differences in how you mix it (more or less water perhaps). I do have recipes for both and the one that came with my waffle iron for Belgium Waffles is much more involved, involving time to rise or something maybe before cooking.
No way! Waffles turn into a brick when they get cold. Might as well be a frisbee." Waffles all the way. Pancakes start out great but quickly turn into a mushy suck-fest. "
Choosing between pancakes and waffles would be like choosing which one of my children I love most.
It can't be done.
" Waffles, but that's probably because I only eat them once a year on "våffeldagen". Delicious. "Yeah, that.
WAFFLES!!!!!!!!!!

(and yes, I am a nuclear physicist who knows about these things, we can rebuild him, etc.)
OK gentlemen, here's how I see it. The average pancake is better than the average waffle (waffles are easier to burn, get too crispy, too soggy, etc) and the facts that one generally gets several pancakes in an order compared to only one waffle and pancakes are more likely to come with eggs/bacon/hash browns/sausage cannot be denied. It is also easier to spread butter on a pancake.
HOWEVER
I would submit that the best done waffles are better done than the best pancakes, and while this does make ordering waffles risky, it does sometimes payoff greatly. The different textures and shape to the waffle that make it harder to pull off also pay great dividends when successfully executed, and waffles benefit more from having bacon baked into them, a key factor to all fair minded people.
IN SUMMATION
To decide a matter like this, we must judge each of these at their peak and without help from side dishes. By that criteria, waffles must be deemed the winner.
Ok, I went with pancakes, and I have an actual rationale:
Waffles are delicious, don't get me wrong; however, as a breakfast item, waffles come alone. If you order a waffle, then you are gonna get one big waffle, loaded with toppings, and that's it. On top of that, a waffle will fill you up rather quickly.
Pancakes, on the other hand, can augment any other meal. What do all diners offer as a side? Pancakes. You will never get a side of waffles. Pancakes don't make you feel bloated, and they behave almost as a built-in dessert to a delicious breakfast.
I love ya, waffles, but you don't sound like a good thing to follow a ham and cheese omelet.
