" dont get me wrong guys, i used to be a big fan of anime. shows like dragonball z are embedded into my childhood memory and i love the animatrix, akria, cowboy bebop. but god damn, wtf is hentai so popular for? whats all this girls in school uniforms shit?! wtf?!?!?!?!?! is up with all of the robots?!?!?!?!?!?! "Hentai is popular to the same crowds who like regular porn, and it's the same class of entertainment. It's always badly thought out, dumb, poorly produced, animated, etc. The school uniform thing is just a fetish some people have, and the group of anime with giant robots in it is actually a very small percentage. From the sounds of it, you haven't really watched an anime series since the mid-90s and your knowledge-base seems to come exclusively from internet posts complaining about various aspects of it. If you don't want to watch it, that's fine but I feel like a lot of the hate for anime comes from people totally disconnected from it, making broad generalizations which are usually, totally untrue.
So what is with the distain for anime?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
because americans likes their animation to be dumb and simple minded, they are uncultured. There are some really good anime out there that can rival hollywood movies. Ghost in the shell series, the matrix copied their idea of connecting these plugs to the back of their head.
I belive once we get these live action animes out there in a movie form, ppl will get it and start to want to find the stuff that started it all. Until we do, that's not going to happen. Anime is too intellegent for western audiences, they like things pixar dumb.
" It just plain sucks. I'm sorry. I know people that watch anime don't want to hear it, but you have to. Its the same with emo kids and emo music. I know emo kids don't want to hear that their music sucks, but it does. "Just as there are different types of music, there are different types of anime. To categorize them all into one lump and dismiss them as such is really nothing more than a display of ignorance.
It's mere human nature to hate what we don't understand. Most people will not even make an effort to understand the Anime culture, therefore they'll never like it. Then, they'll see someone bashing it and hating on it and decide to join in because "hey, that stuff was weird so I'm with this guy". Typical idiot syndrome going around these days.
Don't have anything against anime myself. I actually like the stuff. Seen a few series here and there, as well as downloaded my favorites off the net onto my computer. Been awhile since I've done some major watching though. Just don't have the time anymore.
Ive seen some anime over the years. I dont know what ive seen that is up to date. In some cases the detail and animation is amazing and then there is stuff were it looks like they just barely scraped by on purpose. At first I assumed all anime was of the same ultra high quality, as the years went by that opinion has changed. I remember renting "Sky Crawlers" because it was Production I.G was involved. I thought it would be about brave pilots and amazing air battles. I was only half right. That was was one depressing ass movie, the pilots were expendable as coffee cups. I just feel bad for a company that has to put all the work and time into animating something that depressing. I appreciate the art and the work but jeeeeez. I did rent Ponyo and that was pretty cool. Sometimes I forget that anime can be amazing and not be a soul sucking, violent story.
The only problem with anime is that it has a horrible fanbase, regardless of location. Anime fans are terrible for many reasons, the biggest of which seems to be that they think anime is some kind of "high art" or "high culture" thing, when really it's just entertainment. It also doesn't help that anime fans have terrible taste in everything, and seem to like only the worst shows possible, whether its some thousand episode show that was marketed for children and pre-teens and aired at according time slots for those audiences yet the fans think its some kind of adult-crafted masterpiece, or some creepy fanservice-riddled show that airs past midnight that panders to the 20- to 30-something otakus because they love panty shots and women that look like they're still in junior high, or some show that they think is some philisophically significant piece of art that uses a lot of religious symbolism when that symbolism is really there because the Japanese creator thought that they looked cool and not because they thought it would be deep and thought-provoking. Wanna know why people hate anime? Its fans are fucking horrible.
And this is coming from a guy that enjoys 1970s monster-of-the-week giant robot shows where the plot is nothing more than "kickass guy gets in a robot to kick some ass" for 50+ episodes.
Oh yeah, your conventions, cosplaying, Japanophiling, and spouting random Japanese phrases you picked up while watching anime yet don't know what the hell it means beyond what the fansubber told you isn't helping at all. And don't give me that "well, there's sci-fi conventions" and that because those guys aren't exactly high on the totem pole of respect either.
There aren't a lot of anime series I really got into. Most of them drag on the central plot for entirely too long. What lots of times starts off as a fairly interesting story ends up losing it's way. The few series that I did really enjoy had pretty short runs.
I did really enjoy Outlaw Star, Case Closed and GiTS:SAC. Didn't care much for 2nd gig, didn't grab my attention like the first.

Anime is the equivalent of Emo music.

Yet, it is those fans that have pretty muched caused the entire disdain in the first place. It doesn't matter that most anime is complete garbage, because the same could be said of anything else, be it movies, live-action television shows, Western animation, even video games. No, it's the fact that the fans of anime (and even if there are different genres and whatnot, it doesn't matter because anime fans themselves lump it all together regardless) treat it like it is above all the "uncultured, Western media" while they eat Pocky sticks and claim Neon Genesis Evangelion is some kind of measuring stick for the deep, emotional, thought-provoking nature anime can deliever that nothing else can (nevermind that Space Runaway Ideon did what Evangelion did over a decade before it and did it much better). Fans of anime, when they try to give recommendations of shows or movies that are the "best in the field" always give the same generic answers, and that answer is "bullshit that Cartoon Network/Adult Swim aired that originally aired as a children's show in Japan" or "some obscure crap fansubbed that only appeals to hardcore anime fans but nobody else, even the average Japanese person thinks that shit is creepy and weird". It'd be like if a hardcore movie fan tried to recommend great movie classics to somebody, and those recommendations included "Surf Ninjas" and "Blank Check". The worst anime fans are much like the worst video game fans, or the worst fans of anything, and the unfortunate reality is that most anime fans are the vocal douchebags that ruin the image in everybody's eyes.
after hearing that neon genesis evangelion was the best anime EVER, i decided to give it a go. i can't even make it past episode 5. the main character is SO FUCKING ANNOYING, the story is extremely derivative, all of the supporting characters are assholes. the only redeeming factor are the sick Eva combat scenes that last all of 3 minutes per episode and the fact that it's made by Gainax, and even then it's always the same (SHIT, HERE COMES AN ANGEL, DROP BUILDINGS AND PREP EVA 01). maybe it's just me, i can't stand funny/romantic anime because 100% of the time it's excessively unfunny/melodramatic to the point of ridiculousness. there is good anime out there, and i think it's basically any show that avoids anime stereotypes almost completely (ghost in the shell, paranoia agent, ergo proxy). plus, anime is made for japanese audiences, so it's to be expected that western viewers find it strange.
" I haven't seen that much anime, but what I have seen does not appeal to me:This.I do of course realize that this isn't consistent with all anime, but it is from what I've seen. EDIT: I forgot to mention that anime is for jerks. Blame Jeff, not me. "
- stereotypical to the extreme: there is always an innocent school girl-type, a modest and brave protagonist, etc.
- too weird: strange, hypersexual Japanese weirdness
- too dumb: giant mechs with swords?
- overly designed character appearances: crazy blue hair, ridiculous costumes that are simply insane
- everything on this list: http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/symphony/top-10-worst-anime-cliches/30-39734/

Wow, I think I may love Giant Bomb all the more now that I know I'm not the only one on Earth who's sick of anime/manga everything. In the early days, when i loved anime, I'd give it a lot of wiggle room to be quirky and bizarre because of the translation issues and cultural differences. Years later, I no longer feel like being forgiving. Instead of getting popular, and thus, getting better; anime has somehow patented its nonsensical awfulness and made it a selling point to emo kids in the U.S.
Most anime that are the most visible are children's shows; power fantasies for 10-14 year olds. They have stories, themes, and characters that are simple and often silly, so for many that have lived for enough years to have seen those things ad nauseum while growing up they are no longer interesting and seem juvenile.
I've read manga that I've liked, but honestly most of the stuff that is the most mainstream and popular is exceptionally juvenile and lame as all hell.
Because the art style belongs in a learning cartoon channel for adolescents, not in a deep, cartoon drama with mature themes.
UNLESS (and it's fucking rare) the artists actually put effort in the animation and character proportions (Akira, Ghost in a Shell, TRIGUN, ect) then I'm okay with it.

For you, I imagine it's Naked Cartoon Dick Where Naked Cartoon Pussy Should Be.
I will fully admit that the only kind of anime I've ever seen is shonen. I would be open to giving it a chance if I knew where to begin, but I'm not about to wade through a crap ton of terrible for the good stuff.
Lots of bumping for old threads going on.
I've probably watched more anime than 90% of people on these boards and I still think that anime is for jerks, man boys, and weirdos. Check my profile if you don't believe me. I'm an anime loving mother effer, but I'm standing alongside some of the weirdest people that exist, and I'm not proud of that. Not one bit.
My avatar is from an damned anime! (An hilariously awesome anime might I add).

Really? You do realize that @Cloudenvy and @Bocam and @AlexanderSheen and possibly @Turambar post here, right?
The reason I hate it is because most anime is extremely silly, but takes itself seriously. Almost as if you're watching it waiting for the stupid one liners and horrible voice acting (dubbed and subbed alike).

That's why I didn't say 100%, or even 95%. I also like to include all of the anime audio CDs/Dramas I've listened to which probably bumps me up some.

I honestly think it's the fact that there is very little anime on Tv ,few good english dubs and the fact that you really have to look for it keeps people from getting into it . The kinda emo , feminine male and the half naked teenage girl stereotype of anime puts people off too. you just have to look at Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z which were on Tv everyday, which alot of people love to know that there's nothing wrong with it, just that anime doesn't have enough exposure over here to get much appreciation .I would call MGS an anime and I fucking love that series .
@CaLe: My only regret about leaving manga and anime is that I never got to see what else happened in Gintama.
I personally dislike anime and manga because most of it is seriously shit. About 2+ years ago all my series started either ending, going on hiatus, or being pulled off the sites I went to due to copyright. I was left with a rapidly decreasing number of decent stories, and all attempts to find new ones to fill in the gaps was met by chibbys, gratuitous fanservice, and just plain dumb crap. I got fed up with all the bullshit that weighed down the medium and decided it was time to get away from it all.

The same?
I hate most anime and I've lived in Japan for my entire university career.
The funny thing is the majority of Japanese people dislike it too. Right now the only people really watching it are the really nerdy ones. I never got the fascination of it. Oh well, people free to spend their time and money how they want...I just hope these kids realize if they go to Japan they won't be greeted like "awesome kawaiiiiii", it'll be just like here "uh...you're fucking weird".
So why even bother to ask that same question of people who enjoys watching anime? People on a video game website trying to act superior and disdainful in the face of another equally nerdy past time will never not be hilarious to me.@Turambar said:

Spittin' truth yo.
It all seems very junior high to me.
People get so defensive when you talk about anime in a negative light. If you like something, then who cares what other people think.

There is nothing wrong with anime, the only thing that is wrong is american animation where it appeals to a younger audience with absoutely no thinking involved. Anime is usually well written imo depending on the series and everything animerican animation isn't, a good medium. I belive one day when they used all the medium of novels and comic books for movies, they are going to create alot of anime movies in a few years.
HITMAN!!!!
Remember when that mentality fit squarely on the shoulders of video game players as well?It all seems very junior high to me.

Does it get more hilarious when you consider just how many (high profile) games have a pretty heavy anime art style?
