Poll What do you press for 1 minute in the microwave? (101 votes)

One-Zero-Zero 26%
Six-Zero 8%
...there is a 1 minute button 56%
Poll 10%

I realize this is a silly question but it’s come across my mind a few times so I thought I’d ask.

I always press 1-0-0 to get 1 minute knowing I can press 6-0. There is also a 1 min button which is just a single button press and probably the most logical choice but I guess I like pressing buttons...

Whatever I first decide to do, if it's not my own microwave it probably wont work. Some have shortcuts bound to the numbers unless you press Time Cook. Others you gotta put in 1-0-0 because they can't go over 59 seconds.

Weird how different all those things can be.

I have a 1 minute button on my current microwave, but in the past (or on work/hotel microwaves) I have pressed 6-6 for a 66 second run just because it was even faster to type than 6-0 (I didn't have to move my finger on the pad)

If it's a microwave that doesn't have a 1-minute button, then I press 6 0.

I figured out when I was a kid that I could save time by just pressing 6 0 when everyone else pressed 1 0 0. I felt like a genius having discovered some sort of shortcut in life and have never looked back.

No, because they are generally formatted as xx:xx, with each digit you press pushing the last digit you pressed to the left. so if you press 1-0-0, it will be 01:00.

ANYWAY, I just press one.

I have a tiny microwave that’s mostly used for kids junk, popcorn, and maybe microwave oatmeal. I could do without it, as the microwave is where the worst food comes from. I usually use the oven or toaster oven to reheat leftovers.

Anyhow, 6-0.

I put in two-zero-zero and then only use half the time. Next one is a button push freebie that way.

I have a dial on the front of my microwave instead of buttons, so I guess I can't vote?

There is a 1 minute button, but I prefer just double tapping the start button which also doubles as the "add 30 seconds" option.

The 1-0-0 option. Although, I'd probably actually input 1-0-2 or 5-8 or something. I have a weird proclivity for putting things in the microwave for not round numbers.

Also, the existence of dial microwaves is blowing my mind.

This is interesting, I've not used a microwave in over ten years - but when I last did it had a spin dial. I thought we were probably at the stage where you just spoke at them, used a phone or they read the instructions themselves. With all the Bakalar smart fridge talk, I just assumed microwaves were even further ahead on the tech curve.

Ours has a button that adds 15 seconds to the clock with each press until you get to 3 minutes then it adds 30 seconds with each press until it gets to 6 minutes then it adds a minute with every press.

I’d press that 4 times as I don’t have other buttons that add time.

My microwave has a "jog-wheel" that increases by 5 sec increments even 1/20 of a turn, so I twist a wheel and the numbers go up.

On a tangent, I remember hearing on NPR many many years ago a....riddle? Logic problem? A word puzzle of some type anyways, the setup for which I've forgotten, but which asked us to make sense of the instruction "90 is too much. Try 120."

I wasn't able to solve the puzzle but the answer, probably obvious in this context, was that it referred to a microwave timer. 90 seconds > 1 min 20 seconds.

One of those stupid things that get burned into memory and I'll probably never forget. If only I could delete this one and use the extra capacity to better remember my wedding anniversary...
