What music do you listen to when you're working?

So, i'm sat here doing some work for college. It's a right pain in the ass, and i'm getting distracted by all sorts - i'm sure you know how it is. Anyway, I always find listening to music helps me get along just fine, but anything with lyrics tends to distract me further. I was hoping to find some music without lyrics, you know, chillout tunes or whatever you want to call them. Any ideas? I don't care what genre, just throw it at me - who knows, I might find something I like.

What about you guys? You got any preferences to 'working music'?

If I'm going to focus, and let music block out distractions, certain types of classical are perfect. My personal fav is listening to Pierre Fournier, since for some reason, after a full album, I'll suddenly realize that I've been more productive than I've been the rest of my week.

If I don't need to concentrate, I'll just listen to regular rock/alt genres.

@Fbomb: I might have to give that a try then - thanks. Though that'll probably have to be for the next thing I leave until the last second. It's a little too late for what i'm working on right now. As some might say - "FML".

I tend to have to listen to music I haven't listened to before or that I'm not that familiar with when I want to concentrate. Maybe that's just me being strange but listening to something I know just makes me think about the music for some reason, or worse, sing along.

If you want something good without lyrics, check out David Bowie's "Low" or "Heroes", and just take out the few songs with lyrics.

Songs in languages that you don't know also works. Have some other suggestions So I'll get back to you if I remember them :P

Scientist.
De Facto.
David Bowie's 'All Saints' is an album of all his instrumental work.

I always find some Instrumental music or Ambient music works best. Like some good old Jesper Kyd.

sky.fm has great streaming when you don't care about a specific band. It's by genre, so you can have a classical stream or one with more techno.

Local hero by Dire Straits is pretty good, probably too short to listen to over a long study period but it could fit into a study playlist nicely.

Normally just my top rate music in iTunes, which includes a whole variety of music, such as postal service, greg laswell and more. Or I will listen to my mix of classical music.

Well, what I listen to changes, but the method doesn't. iPod + noise-cancelling headphones (not earbuds) + Calvin Harris/Mr Hudson = greater chance of awesomeness.

I'll listen to anything while working, but you might wanna try some post-rock. Try Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, etc.

either radiohead or trance. radiohead because the music is relaxing and soothing so not distracting, serve as good background music. trance for when i want to stop slacking and get pumped up and really focus and do my work fast.

Explosions In The Sky ( All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone and  Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place) and Sigur Rós  ( Takk... and  ( )) for sure. If you like Sigur Rós then check out Jónsi. That's the lead singer's new side project.

Aim works for me well (trip hop), also Phaeleh (dubstep). Some time ago I used to spin Metal Fingers (hiphop), but now it's too distracting o.O
Oh, and RJD2 (hiphop), and Telefon Tel Aviv (electronica).

Really good answer, I tend to listen to post-rock when I am doing work. Other bands like Ef, and Yndi Hadla are worth checking out.

Chiptunes. A giant 6 hour chiptune playlist. Just repetitive bleeps and bloops 'til the work gets done.

This topic had to get busy while I was watching The Pacific, didn't it? Ha, thanks for all the suggestions, people. It'll give me something to look into tonight. ;)

I listen to Atmosphere (That is, Slug and Ant, not that shitty techno band) and the others on their Pandora station while I'm working out.  But while I'm sedentary, I usually actually listen to Bombcasts/Quick Looks/ERs.
