I've been wondering this for awhile because it is one of the most boring things I've ever seen produced but there has to be some reason that it keeps coming on every year.
Who actually watches the Macy's parade?
My dad watches it, and his family does, too. I sort of watch it just because its on, in the background...I sometimes like watching the marching bands, since I was in one in high school. The only time I was truly happy to have been watching it was when the Foster's Home For Imaginary Friend's float Rick Rolled everyone.
I watched it in person a couple times when I was a kid, but see no appeal to watching it on television. It is, indeed, exceptionally boring.
There was a parade? Was it on UStream or Twitch? Wait, TV? What's that? The reason it's produced, in my opinion, is to sell advertising on TV and the organizers make a ton of money. People will watch anything on TV sometimes.Yeah I laughed at The Onion's idea that one of the balloons would be a giant iPhone.
I watched it lazily for about an hour and a half. A friend of mine was in one of the bands, so once they performed, off goes the parade.
I usually watch parts of it. Which means I just have it on in the background while playing a game or whatever. I think a lot of people probably just turn it on in the background while they cook/talk with family/etc.
We have the Santa Claus parade in Toronto which is similar in concept, if not in scope, and it's gone from something that I loved seeing as a kid to a massive pain the ass when I need to get around town and parents think it's okay to take up all the room in the subway with baby strollers. Seriously, just carry the little fucker you lazy bastards.
I never do, although since I live close to the NYC, I wouldn't mind going to watch one year. I can't imagine I would want to do it more than once though.

This.
In fact whenever American Thanksgiving rolls around she gets this teary-eyed look then says, "I wish one year we could take the whole family to see the parade".
Um.......I can not think of any fathomable reason why someone would watch it (without any social (or otherwise) obligation to do so) and actively be entertained by it.
I don't know anybody that looks forward to watching it. It's just something to have on in the morning.
i live in NY so i try to go every year. it's an amazing experience. On tv they spend so much time showing whats happening at 34th street, when you never see that when actually seeing the parade in person. I usually stand by the start of the parade and seeing the floats, the balloons and especially the marching bands is pretty awesome.
the last two years i have stayed home because i have a 2 year old now and i have to wait for him to be able to wait for hours for the parade to start. We put it on in the background while we prep for the day, and yeah, the television production is terrible.
Wow guys. Not old, not socially irrelevant and not even a little bit boring and I LOOOOOVE watching the parade. Makes me feel like a kid again. You guys are monsters.

Lol, nice. What exactly is the significance of it? To answer the OP, I have never watched it, and I don't know anyone who does.
