Amazing.  Usually the top critics % is lower than the overall rating.

What's strange about this thread is that most are pumped/positively influenced about the news of good reviews, but when Transformers 2 got bad reviews there were threads mostly consisting of "Reviews don't mean shit" and such.  Something to think about.

Personally, I hate the viral marketing behind the movie, but that doesn't deter me from wanting to see it.  I've been anticipating it since I had heard that Neill was making it after getting nixed from the Halo project.  Unfortunately, I won't get to see it until Saturday at the earliest, and even then, I don't like seeing a flick with a ton of MySpace-idiot-braindead-clusterfuck-teenagers fidgeting on their cell phones and ruining the movie for me.

@MB: See, what people are insinuating is that KaosAngel get a torrent of a cam of District 9, just in case you had no idea what these guys are talking about.

That's awesome to hear, I was gonna see it tomorrow no matter what the critics said, but it's always nice to see positive reviews.

The plot section of Ebert's review makes this sound so hilariously bad. However, he still seemed to like it well enough, as did others, so it's probably not as ridiculous in execution as it sounds in concept.

I just got back from the midnight screening in my area. All I am gonna say is that the movie was amazing, that that you should all go see it as soon as you can. I am going again tomorrow!

Sometimes people just sense a movie will underperform and they give it an extra nudge for that reason. Pan's Laberynth, an alltogether okay movie but by no means "best film ever" material, recieved a similiar critical reception for similair reasons.

I'd rather wait 8 months for the DVD or wait for it to show theatrically here in Japan than watch a fucking cam.  I've had dreams with better clarity.

I'm going to see it eventually but my 13 year old brother wants to go to. I'm not sure he should since it's rated R so after someone sees it could they please tell me if they think it's alright for a somewhat mature 13 year old to see.

why would you read eberts review? he always spoils films. i hear this is a movie that is best viewed with no prior knowledge of it all.

Two clarifications:

  1. Peter Jackson was only a producer in this film. He scouted out this director (and his idea), but is otherwise only there to help sell the movie (along with non-executive producer duties).
  2. The score will go down significantly. At launch, Harry Potter 6 was at a 98. Now it's at an 83. It probably won't go down that much, but don't go celebrating just yet.
There, now that that's settled, I'll probably have to wait until it comes out on bluray... I've seen more movies then my paycheck allows this year.

EDIT: holy shit, that critic Armond White is a goddamn idiot. He gave this and Up negative reviews, but gave positive reviews to Transformers 2 and GI Joe. He gave TRANSFUCKINGFOMERS a POSITIVE score, and UP A NEGATIVE ONE? WHAT?

I just saw it. Wow.

Best movie so far this year (unless I'm forgetting something). Also the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen, and I don't even like sci-fi.

PM if you want elaboration, I don't want to spoil anything.

The only thing upsetting was that the theatre was half empty. The vast majority of people are stupid. How do I know? There was a line up for Transformers 2 going around the Silvercity I remember at midnight, nearly twice. Nothing even close to a lineup for this movie.

97% on Rotten Tomatoes huh. Not too bad, I wasnt expecting it to rate this highly. Thats a good thing I guess but it wouldnt have altered my decision to go see it as it looks really interesting.

I'm so excited for this movie. They totally did it the right way, not giving up too much of the story in a trailer.
