GOG closure a hoax
This whole thing was a stupid, stupid mistake from GOG's part, but it was a mistake. They fucked up ok and quite honestly while i can understant some level of anger directed at them because of their little hoax i find the threats of boycotting gog coming from people absurd, gog provides an excellent service for lovers of old games and for that i think they deserve a break just this once so everyone relax.
Yeah, as a marketing stunt it's a fairly poor one, but I'm not going to get all anal about it because I still appreciate the end product (i.e. the titular Good Old Games available on the service that will, hopefully, continue to be DRM free). However, if they could provide some form of... compensation (i.e. EA's back catalog, including all the Bullfrog and Origin stuff. Any or all Infinity Engine games.) I would be far more inclined to be willing to support their service over say... Impulse.
Great! Now I can continue to not give a damn about Good Old Games.

At worst, you thought the service was ending but they made it clear that all your purchased games would still be available for re-download. So, what's the big deal? I don't see any reason to be so upset. "
Because they clearly don't care about their loyal customers, who wanted to keep buying games from them. Its a simple act of not giving a shit. They clearly can walk away from their business at any moment, which is a really disturbing business practice. But hey at least they got their money...... Thats all that matters right? Not to mention the fact that this kind of stunt is extremely childish. Do you want to trust your credit info to people who think pretending to shut down their entire business is a good way to earn support.
The signs were clearly there that they were only moving away from beta. It was never said the business was closing down. You read what you wanted to read.
I knew it was a PR stunt of some kind when I first heard about it and I've just been waiting for them to come back online. The people who "wont shop there anymore" are taking this way to seriously. They had to bring the site down to update to the new platform. All that you lost was your sense of control (which you really dont have anyway) because they didnt tell you. It was a joke, and to some it went to far (which in the video they made they apologized for).
I'm not trying to make anyone more angry but the anger at GOG for this silly stunt is... well its silly. =P
" @LordAndrew said:People have stuck around to find out. Nobody is really pissed off and they got heaps of free press. Win Win really.Yep, exactly as it sounds. Of course, now a bunch of people are pissed off at them or will never realize that Good Old Games is actually still around. Bravo, CD Projekt. Bravo. "" Sounds to me like they're going to announce the new service Wednesday then launch it Thursday. It still doesn't explicitly state that they're shutting down for good. "
I'm not sure what to think of this, on one point it's a smart move and on the other it makes them look like desperate douche bags.
It was amateurish pulling that hoax. But at least they're back. The big news is that they have Hasbro Atari games now! They rolled out Baldur's Gate and promise more titles in the coming weeks. Finally, digital versions of Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights 2 are on their way!

" I already own Baldur's Gate on disc. This is a non-event. "But do you own Planescape Torment? Considering that game only sold less than 50k copies when it first came out, I'm guessing not. Their deal with Hasbro implies that we will get the rest of the infinity engine catalog at some point, if not even earlier stuff like eye of the beholder or the gold box games. Frankly, the implications of this are pretty appealing.
Personally, the KKND series is what I want the most right now. It's almost strange that it isn't already on GOG, must be some kind of license issue. Krome Studios who developed them is still around, they've recently made the unsuccessful Game Room for Microsoft and the quality-yet-to-be-determined Blade Kitten for Atari. I get the impression that they are owned or closely affiliated with Atari (considering how the vast majority of the titles on the Game Room seem to be Atari 2600 games) - and Atari is already releasing stuff on GOG.
If it actually works then great. Gog is a good service but this stunt really shit on those who already support gog. Shame on them.
well it definitely brought buzz to the place, I hadnt heard of it until their fake going out of business stunt so...
