In Ender's Game, the enemy race, called Formics, or "buggers", are led by a sentient being called the Hive Queen. The Hive Queen controls all of the other Formics through instantaneous telepathy, as our bodies do with our limbs.
This book came out in the eighties, and the Gravemind is very similar. Figured I'd speak up, not that anyone cares.

The Halo series has a penchant for honorable references.
Take the scene in "Truth and Reconciliation" during which a marine freaks out in a very Bill-Paxton-in-Aliens fashion.
Because there was no such concept before enders game *a bad book by the way* some times its just a conicidence simple as that. it doesn't have to be just like that all the time, some times someone or some company comes up with an idea and has no intent on it being like some thing else.
P.S: the gravemind and the flood wanted to consume all things, the formics did not.
I think with sci-fi it is easy for two completely seperate authors or franchises to accidentally duplicate certain themes, without either party having ANY intent to deliberately copy from the other. I think sci-fi generally captures our own fears and concerns of our society facing an unkown future, so this is where most sci-fi themes truly are borrowed. Still in the sci-fi community a good idea captures the imagination of everybody, and its hard to seperate any influence of past themes to new ones. Sci-fi as a whole is an evolving entity.
Something like a Gravemind from halo is not an uncommon theme. Borg in Star Trek; Orai, Replicants, and Wraith in Stargate. HMMMM, those two examples are still more recent than Ender's Game. Any 1 have any other examples former to Ender's Game? Would invasion of the Body Snatchers count or any zombie flicks?
