Every GDC panel is recorded, but you need to purchase them and they cost a lot of money because the presentations are the property of whoever it is owns Gamasutra and Game Developer magazine, because they're the ones who put on GDC.  Now you know!

No.  Like the guys have kind of said on the Livecasts this week, the talks are meant for professionals and game designers looking for insight into other companies or producers' techniques when it comes to content creation or business management, not just your average PAX panel for crazy fans who want to hear guys from their favorite game companies talk about whatever.  They charge so much because the target audience is game companies who want to use the them as educational tools for improving their business (which is what they are meant to be), not random Joe Gamer who goes "I LIKE SWERY; I WANNA HEAR WHAT HE SAID ABOUT MAKING DEADLY PREMONITION OR WHATEVER!!!"

But gamespot has some of the panels recorded. Are they allowed to show those for free?

@yoshimitz707: Obviously I'm just some dude who happens to know some of this stuff so I don't know the particulars, but my assumption is that since the press is not speaking to the audience that the monolithic corporation who runs GDC (and again, also owns Gamasutra and Game Developer magazie) is attracting (and also can't provide things like the actual slides from the presentations), they're given special dispensation.

Again, it all kind of comes into the argument of "what exactly is the press doing at GDC in the first place?"
