The Kickstarter was a massive success. It raised $2,485,506, well past their original goal of $700,000. Development was originally being done by The Odd Gentlemen, although they eventually dropped out of the project. At that point What Pumpkin, the distributor behind all of Homestuck's physical products, created What Pumpkin Games to finish the project. Hiveswap: Act 1 was originally a polygonal game, but because of this change was scaled back to using 2d designs more in line with the original webcomic.

The Homestuck webcomic follows events involving both the humans of planet Earth and the trolls of planet Alternia. Hiveswap: Act 1 is a side story following the human girl Joey Claire who has somehow been transported to Alternia, switching places with the troll boy Dammek. The game will follow her quest to return home. The eventual Act 2 will follow Dammek's similar quest.
