Super Mario RPG took the Interactive Battle System to a whole new level. Every character could enhance their regular attack and block with a properly timed 'A' . Also all of the characters special moves were somehow interactive and required proper timing and coordination to see its full effects. Super Mario was one of the first games to include a classic RPG turned based battle system that actually required the player to pay attention instead of mashing the attack button.
Final Fantasy may be one of the earliest RPG's to Include the Interactive Battle System with the character Sabin. Sabin has an abiility called Blitz and upon entering different key combinations he would unleash powerful attackes. Setzer's Slot ability could also be considered into this category.
