Games where the characters are 2D bitmap images (sprites), but the environment and scenarios are made in a 3-Dimensional space. This technique was commonly used on consoles like the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS. Many 90's First-Person Shooters also used this technique. Some used it as a stylistic choice like Paper Mario and Rakugaki Showtime.
Games that have animals (except humans) as the main character. The character must be playable.

Feline animals commonly kept as pets. There are many different breeds and varieties.
When a game lets players grab enemies and throw them as projectiles. Commonly found in platformers, but also sometimes found in over-the-top 3rd person action games.
Games featuring guests introduce playable, established characters from outside of a franchise. Primarily but not exclusively seen in fighting games.

Inflation is when you expand or fill up something with something else, usually air, to make it more full or bigger. Some mini-games have you be the first to completely inflate a balloon, or, in the case of Dig-Dug, you inflate monsters to have them explode!
A mascot is an iconic character heavily used in the advertising and marketing of a product, franchise, business, or company. Notable mascots include Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ulala, Mickey Mouse, and the Big Daddies.
Sports games that feature pre-existing videogame characters, rather than real athletes.
