Pretty sure this will be part of the new campaign.
Pretty sure this will be part of the new campaign.
Left 4 Dead 2's first DLC pack sadly won't focus on the Midnight Riders, as I'd hoped, but it will hook you up with those fine survivors from the original game. It's called "The Passing" and it's due out in Spring of 2010. Here's the word, straight from Valve.

Dubbed "The Passing," the first game add-on for L4D2 brings the original Left 4 Dead (L4D1) Survivors down south for a meeting with the L4D2 cast, while delivering new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay for the PC and Xbox 360.

Targeted for release in early spring, "The Passing" takes place just after the Dead Center campaign of L4D2. Set in a small town in rural Georgia, players assume the role of the L4D2 Survivors as they meet with the L4D1 characters.

In addition to the new co-operative campaign and associated narrative, "The Passing" will include new arenas for Survival, Versus and Scavenge mode and introduce a new co-operative challenge mode of play. The Passing will also include a new "uncommon common" zombie class, melee weapon, and firearm.

"The Passing will become the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "It will also be a huge offering of new gameplay content, with something new for every game mode plus a new uncommon common and weaponry."

I'm a little surprised this episode is set after Dead Center, which places it near the beginning of the Left 4 Dead 2 timeline and not after it, as you might expect. So you have to imagine nothing too terrible is going to happen to our intrepid heroes like Coach and Ellis, since they'll need to go on and participate in the game's four subsequent campaigns.

I would've liked to see what happens after the end of the game, but then again, I will in no way argue with a significant piece of new content for this game. How about you? Excited to see Louis and Bill again? Ready to (presumably) fork over for a new campaign?

I'm only interested if you can play as the originals in the rest of the campaign.

Also, does this suggest the new campaign will be 8 player? I doubt it considering it's left 4 dead, not left 8 dead but still one can dream.

I would not be surprised if they charged for the DLC. They seem to be leaning towards charging for content more and more. They even charged full-price for what should have been an expansion to L4D1

I have no words. Valve always gives out content for their games for free. Unless you're a 360 owner, you won't pay a dime.

@ZeroCast: Of course not, why would I pay to have four old characters, another half hour campaign and a couple weapons. It's hilarious that everyone saw this coming the moment they announced L4D2, if it's paid DLC then Valve can go to hell. L4D2 alone is bullshit, but yes, let us all stand by and let valve turn into Infinity ward, EA or any other money grubbing pile of snobs out there.

Personally I've been wondering if they would start charging for DLC on the PC for a while.  The key point is they used to call their free updates 'updates', not 'DLC'...  I don't think we can count on anything at this point, but I hope it's free, because I won't be paying either way.

I do hope this DLC will be free on the pc. I've loved valve's business plan for the longest time and if they start becoming more and more like EA or *shudder* Activision i will be deeply saddened. Tha fact that they're taking their sweet time on episode 3 gives me hope.

So are the survivors going to be driving around in Mr. Gibbs Jr's stolen vehicle for the whole campaign? They should add a death match mode called turf war and have factions of zombies and teams of suvivors doing crazy things and driving around racecars. Then they can rename it to Grand Theft Zombie.

My interest will largely depend on the cost and content of said DLC, which at this point is not clear. If it's a good DLC pack, I'll pay up to $10 depending on what is included. Otherwise I'll just let it pass.

People who live in a fantasy world where L4D is an expansion or not worth the full price and feel entitled to free things from Valve can shove it.  The DLC will cost money, most likely $5-10, and those who won't pay, this isn't for you anyway.  L4D isn't a series for you.  Stop being delusional that you're entitled to things because you're one of the millions who buy quality Valve games and grow up.  Even if you won't stop being delusional, all of Valve's content is more than worth what they charge, they need to start increasing prices to what they offer is worth or they may go bankrupt.  Even if this game was considered an expansion pack it was worth the full price.  I didn't think Giantbomb had people like this on their forums.

I too am disheartened at all this "it better be free" talk.  You expect people to work on something, produce a good or service and then just give it away freely?   They may have set a precedence of doing this but that doesn't justify demanding it of them.  If when they release it they happen to say "oh, by the way, this one's on us" then that's fantastic but if they should choose to ask for a little money to help pay for the simple man hours used to create the thing or other technical aspects of it as well then who are you to cry foul on them?  Why don't you go tell your boss you don't really need to be paid for the work you do?  See how far that takes you.

I for one am pleased with what L4D2 offered and was perfectly glad to pay full price for it.  Assuming it is a quality piece of work (which I fully expect it will be) I will also be fine with purchasing this DLC.  Valve has a track record of supporting their fans through great games and continued support of those games but with game houses closing down and plenty of people in the gaming industry likely wondering if/when they might be told they will no longer be receiving a paycheck I think it is understandable and justifiable for Valve to ask us to show our support for them through purchasing their games and what sounds like a fairly large content update as well.

Of course, money talks, and if people don't buy the DLC your vote may be heard in the matter, but you may not like the results.  If not enough people buy it yet Valve determines that they do in fact need to charge for further updates they could in time decide it isn't financially prudent for them and suddenly no more updates.  Where does that get us?  Less quality games and content to play and enjoy.  Am I saying you must buy this DLC to ensure a quality future?  No, but if you appreciate their work and want them to continue, show your support a little, get out your wallet and quit bitching.  Skip a trip or two to Burger King and I bet you can afford to get this content.  I bet you get enjoyment out of it for longer than you would that fast food.

I agree with you man, Bravo.. PC gamers need to stop thinking of themselves being "too good" to support the companies who put time and effort into these products.. making games ain't cheap, the least we could do is support the developers.

Oh, mercy. Can you imagine a company actually charging for a product? Goodness gracious, what sort of crazy, mixed up world are we living in?
Valve is a company. They have stockholders. They are publicly traded. They need to make money, just like everyone else.
