I've never really been interested in reading video game related novels, but lately I've been thinking about revisiting the Mass Effect trilogy. Are the books worth giving a shot, I remember hearing some huge outrage regarding one of the books, but what about the others?

I read Revelation. It was pretty mediocre sci-fi, but did a solid job keeping my Mass Effect anticipation in check (it released a little while prior to the first game, which I was uncannily excited for).

More than anything, Revelation explores the relationship between Anders and Saren: two of my favourite characters in that series.
