Background
Mordheim was originally a boardgame published by Games Workshop, based on their Warhammer Fantasy universe. A meteor crashes into the city of Mordheim and almost completely destroys it, but valuable pieces of the meteor, known as Wyrdstones, are left behind. This attracts a wide variety of mercenaries and adventurers, who travel to the city in groups known as warbands to collect and fight over these shards.
Game
Players control a warband, choosing from one of several factions. Four factions have been announced so far:
- Human Mercenaries: Humans who seek the Wyrdstones as a means of acquiring great wealth.
- Skaven: A race of highly evolved rats who originally mutated due to exposure to the Wyrdstones, which they refer to as 'Warpstone'. Skaven use the stones for their magical properties, as well as for currency, and even food.
- The Sisters of Sigmar: A religious order of women who see the Wyrdstones as dangerous and wish to prevent them from spreading outside the city.
- The Cult of the Possessed: Daemon-worshipping fanatics who believe a mythical being lives in the crater left behind by the meteor.
Each faction has specific classes that players can choose from when selecting characters for their warband. These characters can then be upgraded and customized – both visually and in terms of their abilities - as the game progresses.
Combat takes place on a contiguous, non-tiled map, the turn-based approach meaning only one unit is active at any given time. Movement and action points are spent during a turn.
Death and Injury
When a character is defeated in a battle, they are ‘down’ until the fight is over. Then the amount of damage they sustained will be revealed. If they have been killed, they are permanently dead, but they can also come away with only minor injuries, or even lose a limb or an eye. Artificial limbs can be allocated as needed.
