Nox is a fun RPG-lite, with Humour and Wit.

The story of Nox sees a present day country bumpkin cleverly named Jack (voiced sporadically by Sean-William Scott), inadvertently plunged into the magical world of Nox by the evil sorceress Hecuba. Much of the back story to the land of Nox is told through a command and conquer style installation process, however the main quest is to defeat Hecuba by reforging the 'staff of oblivion' the interesting thing about the story of Nox is that it very much depends on which class you choose to play as.
Furthermore three classes are presented to you even before you start the campaign ; the warrior class a melee damage dealing brute accompanied by a very Conan the barbarian looking portrait at the selection screen. The wizard class a ranged damage dealing class with a huge array of spells that are accessed and dragged into your WOW-like spell bar, through your spell book. And finally the conjurer a tree hugging mix of the warrior and wizard with the ability to summon creatures from a large menagerie.
The technology behind Nox was impressive at its time and still stands today allowing it to be enjoyed without the trappings of ugly polygons, the isometric perspective is close enough to provide an enjoyable experience without feeling like you're playing icewindale or baldurs gate.
Therefore the gameplay is easy to grasp ,imagine diablo but simple, right click to move and left click to attack, with health being red and mana being ....blue . You can equip Jack with an impressive selection of arms and armour, with each class having their own unique armour and weapon selection. The gameplay can get repetitive at times especially in the later levels when you face a huge number of foes and all you have to do is click with your big stick of death for them to disappear, however this is only present in the warrior class, the Wizard and to a lesser extent the Conjurer have a deeper combat style, with the ability to create traps, teleport and create barricades against enemies providing many different ways to approach a combat situation.
Sadly the Role playing elements of Nox are few and far between , there is no skill points system or other RPG staples, however this is fine if you're looking for a game that doesn't need a large investment on your behalf to enjoy it.
The level design can become tedious after a while, with each class having to go through the same levels, however they are all approached differently with the Warrior and Wizard having the most diverse campaigns.
By far the most appealing thing about Nox is its sense of humour, it has talking skulls, a warlord named 'horrendous' and henchman with one brain cell between the, all contributing to an experience that has great longevity with each class providing some level of unique content in their respective storylines.
The Single player portion of Nox can be completed in around 10-15 hours depending on which class you choose and your level of skill, Nox does posses a multiplayer mode, however i have decided not to look into it.
So if you're looking for a charming fantasy role playing game that you don't have to invest too much time in then Nox is for you, it may not posses deep role playing elements however it does provide gratification in the form of 3 somewhat unique quest lines and a fantastic sense of fun.

A Dungeon Crawl at Full Sprint 0

Playing Nox is like dashing through an obstacle course coated in the best of high fantasy trappings. You'll test your mettle against devious traps, exploding fireballs, hordes of wizards and skeletons galore in this isometric action game. Its strongest feature is the solid mouse and hotkey gameplay that still holds up 10 years after Nox's retail ...
