The third entry in the World of Mana franchise. First released on Super Famicom, it remained a Japan-exclusive for almost 25 years until its appearance in the Collection of Mana compilation for Nintendo Switch.
The first in the Donkey Kong Land series.
For the first time in Nintendo history, take control of Mario's former adversary as he travels through the island (with his nephew Diddy Kong) to recover his stolen banana hoard in this side-scrolling platformer from Rare (now Rareware).
A licensed platformer game released for both the SNES and the Genesis systems. Both games, although fairly different, allows the player to switch between the Warner Brothers (and Warner Sister) at will in order to overcome obstacles.
A gritty pseudo-sequel to the NES classics Renegade and River City Ransom, once again featuring Kunio-kun. Later saw localization in English as a prequel to River City Girls.
A three-character action platformer only released in Japan, based on the anime series of the same name. Gameplay is similar to The Lost Vikings.
A puzzle-platformer in which players have to guide four 'tinies' through each level using their unique abilities and without any of them dying.
A point-and-click adventure game that follows Bernard Bernoulli, Laverne, and Hoagie as they try to prevent Purple Tentacle from taking over the world.
Play as Olaf, Baleog and Erik, three vikings who have been kidnapped by aliens and are trying to get home.
A top-down shooter from Jaleco, in which two highly trained soldiers infiltrate a high-tech military base.
After a great evil threatens the world, four warriors with mystical powers are called forth to foil its ambitions in this side-scrolling action game.
Set over 200 years before the original game, the third installment of the Castlevania series tells the tale of Simon Belmont's ancestor Trevor, who seeks to destroy Dracula with the help of one of three possible companions.
Released in 1989, Sweet Home is quite possibly the first survival horror, or console horror RPG. A small team enters a haunted house to study the deceased owner's frescoes, only to become trapped by the angered spirits within. It inspired Resident Evil, the game that established the survival horror genre. Sweet Home can also be considered an early immersive sim.
A text adventure from Nintendo and Pax Softnica that retells the classic tale Journey to the West.
Psycho Fox is a 2D platformer released for the Sega Master System in 1989. The game allows the titular Psycho Fox to transform into other animals in order to take advantage of their skills.
A NES RPG developed by Birthday and published by Namco. It was never released outside of Japan.
Created by LucasArts in 1988, Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders follows Zak in an attempt to meet girls and stop evil aliens.
An adventure game with some action interludes that was released for several 8-bit homecomputers.
Sorcerian, also known as Dragon Slayer V: Sorcerian, is an action RPG released by Nihon Falcom in 1987. It was considered unique for its party-based action combat, magic combination system, and open-ended multi-scenario system that could be extended with expansion packs.
Maniac Mansion is a graphic adventure game originally released in 1987 by Lucasfilm Games. When the innocent Sandy is kidnapped by the maniacal Dr. Fred, it's up to her boyfriend Dave and his friends to her from certain death!
Shin Onigashima is a two disk adventure game released on the Famicom Disk System. Despite being first-party software, it was never released outside of Japan.
An early example of a "Metroidvania"-style platformer, Legacy of the Wizard tells the tale of a family of adventurers who must use their combined abilities to seek the Dragon Slayer sword and defeat a powerful dragon deep in a twisting labyrinth.
A puzzle game where players guide cat-like people through a series of obstacles until they've defeated all enemies in the level. In Japan, this game goes by the name of Pitman.
The Wizard of Oz is a graphical and textual adventure game based on the classic novel.
