That's a pretty dire title.
If BioWare announced the next Mass Effect would be only be 20 hours long, people would riot. But if it meant 20 hours of consequential character development, I’ll happily sacrifice the extra time.
Exploring environments, optimizing your builds and gear, planning party synergy, engaging in combat against a variety of enemies in a variety of locations... all that shit just gets in the way of being told the story.
What if instead of first person shooters, you didn't shoot and you were just told a story? What if instead of RPG mechanics and challenges and customization options you were just told a story?
I'm glad he can just declare that "MMOs are time sinks and glorified chat rooms". It's not like people who have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for decades were beyond thrilled that they could do exactly that in a video game, and team up with four other players through the magic of the internet using different classes and find synergy and coordinate as a team to take down challenges they could never handle alone. No, it's just watching bars go up and chatting.
For someone who thinks so highly of video games, I find he thinks revealingly little of them.
