No component or HDMI cables included? Really?

    Seriously, I don't understand.

When the ps3 was initially released, Sony pushed HDMI support (which 360 didn't offer until the elite) as one of their major selling points, as neither the 360 or wii could support 1080p. Since then, they have also, and still are, largely pushing blu-ray as one of the system's premier features, yet they never disclose the fact that the system does not come with the materials required to actually benefit from blu-ray over dvd. Instead, people who don't invest heavy research prior to purchase will bring home a system that can display 480i, and then go out to buy Sony's HDMI or component cables for $70 or $40, respectively. This isn't quite false advertising, but it's just dirty.

I think it's pretty clear. The PS3 does not come with HDMI or component cables, those would need to be purchased seperate. Which isn't that bad considering HDMI cables are like $5.

Yeah, it's pretty idiotic of them to do that. I'd rather have them include the HD cables rather than the ethernet cable since HD cables tend to be more expensive than an ethernet cable when you shop at a retail store.

Which, if anything, [their cheapness] makes it even worse that they aren't included with a console that already costs over $9000.

You are getting a wicked deal when you buy a PS3.  It is an expensive piece of quality, luxury hardware that will not red-ring.  They keep lowering and lowering the price in order to sell more, but they are selling the system at a profit loss; hoping to recuperate the loss through game sales.  This is one way they have of cutting costs.

One thing the PS3 has over the 360 though, I can use different kinds of cables for different outputs since the 360's cables cover up the HDMI port.

For example, I have the composite cable, HDMI and Optical-out ports plugged in to other devices on my ps3 so I can switch between different audio devices. I am forced to only use the composite cable on my 360.

Oh, did they come with an HDMI cable when they were $600* then?

I already own a PS3, but it's still pretty tight that they can't throw in an HDMI cable - which would cost Sony like $1 each or something.

*Actually closer to $850 here at release.

Edit: Wait, I missed the bit about no component .... soooo, what does it come with?  Composite only?  If so, that is lol shit.

Sony wants you to buy the "official" PS3 HDMI cable at a ridiculous $69.99 or something like that.

My black Xbox came with component AND HDMI, but those are so cheap it shouldn't matter. I think you should have researched it a little first before buying, then you wouldn't be bitching about it.

The hardware can be god sent for it all it matters, because it won't mean shit if you don't have the product and services to back it up. As much as I despise my 360, Live is still the far better choice for online along with the system having all the great multiplayer games. I have a PS3 and the thing mostly gathers dust until a good exclusive comes out (the last one being inFamous).

That is pretty dumb. It's fine for those of use who know better, but there are some who might stick with the defaults which only provide SD resolution.

I wasn't being serious, and I was also agreeing with you. Throwing in free cables is always a good thing to do, but cables on the market are pretty cheap. The way you worded your post made it sound like the console is still expensive, as if you hadn't purchased one already. Relax dude.

Surely if these consoles are designed to be run on HDTVs, they should come with the right cables as standard rather than sticking us all with SCARTs.

If you still have the receipt, I would go back to the store and ask for cables, as I'm quite confident all models have always come with them. Though if you bought a refurbished system, I'm not sure what the policy is on that.

When the 360 got its price drop last year I believe, one of the things they did was remove the HD cables.  The duel cables that it originally came with were replaced with standard composite cables.  The HDMI cables of the elite models were removes as well.  Why?  Because Microsoft figured if ti worked for Sony, it could work for them.  Remember, both companies are going out of their way to be the other, though they will never actually admit it.

@nnickers: All 360s used to come with Component cables, but Microsoft just changed that, the Arcade and Elites now only come with Composite cables and the Pro is discontinued. So if it's a big factor for anyone picking up a 360 right now, get them before they're gone or you're gonna have to pay extra!

360 cables are proprietary, so unless you get an HDMI cord, you won't be able to play your 360 in Hi-Def.  And if you want 5.1 or something like that you also have to get their cables, so...you're pretty much hosed.

PS3 cables for composite/component are proprietary, but the PS2 component/composite cables do work on them.  Also, generic HDMI cables work as well.

I personally think it sucks in either case, but I think the move by Microsoft to take them out halfway through the generation is a more dickish move.  Kinda like backwards compatibility.

This and all the comments that say the same thing before it should end the discussion. Neither the ps3 nor the 360 comes with an HDMI, and neither did my DVD upscaler so I'm sure if ANY HD players come with HD cables. Really its a worthless thing to bitch at.

Buying cables in stores is USUALLY (not always) a huge ripoff and buying them on-line is way, way cheaper.

Well I think it's better it comes with composite cables. Not everyone has an HDTV. An HDTV can work with composite cables to play and watch games/movies. An SDTV can work with composite cables as well. Sony is smart giving the correct cable that can work with both types of TV's. It costs less this way, even if HDMI cables can be bought for cheap - it's just another thing that could be bent or broken in the box.

It's inconvenient for sure, but it says what's included on the box.
