Didn't know it was in sleep mode when you just turned it off from the front...

It's not sleep mode, it's standby. It essentially turns off, but leaves a bit of electricity flowing, It's better to leave it in standby so that cold machinery doesn't suddenly get a jolt. Only turn it off from the back when you are not going to turn it on for a long time.

^That was the word I was looking for!
So standby is safer? So I haven't been destroying my PS3 unknowingly!

Yes, standby is safer, which is why the feature is implemented.

Yea, you're absolutely right about that. I would say leave it on standby...also if you have your controller on the table you wont need to get up and flip a switch to turn on your ps3...only tap the PS button.

I don't know why but I can't stand leaving it in sleep mode, I always have to turn it off completely.

    Think of it this way:

Would you flip the switch on your power supply off on the back of your computer every time you turned off your PC? Probably not.

I turn mine off from the back switch just because it uses electricity I think.

I always turn off all my electricals at the plug when I'm not using them. No point wasting electricity (and money) when they're not doing anything. It doesn't exactly make me rich, but I did notice a drop in my electricity bill when I started doing it.

I turn it off at the back, and I thought that's what everyone did. I don't personally know anyone who leaves it on standby, strange.

I will leave it in sleep mode if I am thinking of turning it on in the next 6 or so hours, but if I know I will probably not be playing the console till next weekend, I just flick the switch in the back of the ps3.

"Hmm, if what you (prince) say is true... hmm. I've always left it in standby mode but the other day passed my PS3 and heard it making some noticeable noise and decided to turn it off. If the power consumption much? I use the machine pretty much daily... so I doubt it qualifies for "leaving it for a long time"."
That's impossible. Your being paranoid. Essentially everything turns off in standby.

My PS3 is plugged into a six-outlet surge protector and I just switch it off at night. Even in stand-by mode, it uses electricity, not much but still some.
