Must ask, was it awkward at all at first going up and talking to them? And you say you were able to talk to them 1-on-1 in some instances for upwards of 20 minutes, I would of thought they'd have people coming up to them all the time so this wouldn't of been possible?
Just interested because I, like a couple of other guys in this thread, probably couldn't work-up the courage to talk to them. I'm a confident enough guy and all, I just feel like I wouldn't want to intrude on them with my bullshit :)
I wouldn't be surprised if they had grown a little bit complacent about the whole thing as a result of them being in this line of work for so long. It would happen to anyone. I'm sure they appreciate the hell out of it however.
I've never worked in games journalism or anything like that and despite hearing their grievances over some aspects of the work to me it still seems like a pretty easy-going job. Some jobs are just easier than others, sometimes you have to work some extremely shit jobs to appreciate that. There's no shame in saying that your job is easy.
But really all this thread is is a thinnly veiled attack on Jeff and Brad for their perceived lack of enthusiasm of late. I don't want Jeff praising each and game to the high heavens. I like to see him being critical and complaining about a game. It keeps him honest.
I like Brad being Brad.
If you don't like that, go to one of the numerous gamesites where ''Everything's Awesome!''.
@ChickenPants: its one little click to mute people by the way. just mute as soon as they start and then keep playing. it doesnt just happen in MOBA games. try playing with random people in starcraft and see what they say if you do bad. or try playing COD and doing bad. its the internet. get some thicker skin or get offline.
I've grown to enjoy Kessler's on camera personality though sometimes I think he's just channeling Jeff and Ryan. I don't know if this is a subconscious thing or just Kessler's real personality but the similarities are uncanny. Kessler's use of language, inflections, cadences and general comedic wheelhouse are all steeped in Ryan and Jeff's influence.
It is for that reason that I don't think he should be a staff member. It is important to have different personalities and perspectives, such as those offered by Klepek, Brad, Vinny, Dave and the Tested guys, and I think Kessler would just offer more of the same.
@jayjonesjunior: I understand the point you're making but that still only applies to a small proportion of the abuse that goes around. You hear stories about people getting abused in Beginner AI for ''stealing'' creep kills or not following someone elses prefered build and plenty of other far more inane rationale. It's just a pretty disgusting community. It is most certainly people's fault. Frustration doesn't give you an excuse to abuse others.
I have gotten frustrated during games but I have never taken that frustration out on anyone else. What the hell's the point? It's a game and I play it to have fun. If I find myself getting to stage where I might feel I need to bitch at people I know it's time to call it a day.
But I know that most of the people dishing out abuse aren't frustrated, they just abuse people because they can.
Welcome to the MOBA games. If you're not joining with friends, you should expect to be called every name in the book. I don't know why but the general populous of LoL, HoN, DoTA, and even SotIS are douche bags and the reason why I've never fully got into any of these games.
Because unlike other genres of games in a Dota game a single bad player can and will destroy your chances of winning, you simply can't overcome the damage caused by a feeder.
But the abuse doesn't just stem from players feeding or making numerous mistakes, players can be abused for the most minuscule of things. You're underestimating the issue if you think it's only present due to significant mistakes.
I would encourage anyone to join the Giant Bomb chat channel in order to find fellow Duders to play with. People there are courteous and would only be too glad to help out new players.
Since this has basically turned into an ER thread I'll just address that (Sorry OP!):
Hope they aren't just rushing something out to appease members come September. It is paramount that they only do it for the right game and with Vinny and Jeff. I'd be really surprised if we see it before the end of the year considering how busy Q4 is.
OP: As fascinating as it is to listen to Paul Barnett it is a disapointment to hear that he was basically just schilling for his game. Understandable though.
