Thanks for linking to that video Drew. I didn't look at the notes and was searching around for it.

@flashflood_29: Yes you're right about that. I think that's how it's used in most cases. It's mostly a negative connotation though. It seems less ideal to me than simply stating what about the piece bothers you instead of using a catch-all term. Especially when that term is anime, which can be so much more than those tropes. The criticism shouldn't stop at "it's very anime".

We really need to get past these "it's like anime" explanations when it comes to explaining story and mechanics in video games. Even if the game in question is based on an anime.

Come on, its perfectly reasonable after all every anime and anything based on one, is one and the same right.

On a serious note they do need to ease up on that its gone past being funny to just being lazy.

So much this. Like it can still be funny at times for comedic effect, but it just feels dismissive at times. Goes hand in hand with "oh Japan" or similar things.

As for the game I like the look and enjoy these kinds of games. My worry is that horse combat is a huge part of it, which drains the interest out of me. Still I'm glad to see more licenses for Warriors style games.

Eh... Anime AF and other descriptive terms are totally fine. You usually have more to say about something when it's good. Which is not the case here.

It's not good if you're using the term "anime" to describe something as bad or uninteresting.

Haven't watched the quick look yet, but I'm just going by the current discussion.

@somejerk: Thanks. I'm interested in Japanese media and books, but I'm not sure I can commit to learning the language (mostly due to those damned Kanji). Gotta ask the questions when the opportunity comes up.

How did you go about learning Japanese? I've heard Genki 1 & 2 are a good place to start. I also wonder if there's a source that teaches specifically how to understand and speak rather than read and write.

NicoNico is despite its limits more complete than anything else, nothing can compare, really no networks of sites can compare. It is a wiki (with nice respectable people who don't have third grade grudges), youtube (without youtube comments and video-stealers and spam and boned third party takedowns and reports), twitch (without that kind of chat and community and spam), deviantart (without those kinds of people), tumblr (without those types), reddit (but with good management and community). The latest addition is NicoNiSolid, hosting 3D viewer applets (Unity etc) for peoples development in models, textures, outfits and tons of MMD goodness.

They've also got a points system for shopping on external sites so you can safely say it is everything that you will ever need. It is unique and I'd love for there to be an alternative in the west with the same quality people that make me continue spending my time on nico.

Haven't listened to the podcast, but I didn't know most of this. I just thought that NicoNico was a site where some Japanese people uploaded their videos and you'd be kicked out if they're over capacity.

How widely used is NicoNico. Is it the preferred video uploading spot in Japan? How much of a variety of stuff is on their? Video games, anime, news, tutorials? What kind of numbers does your average well known NicoNico uploader get per video?

Sorry for the boat load of questions. Just really curious since I can't just read the Japanese on the site.

Can the East or West crew do an episode on The Witness? Or both? I'd like to hear about what puzzles they hated / liked and the narrative stuff Austin is talking about. Right now I've found a few pieces here and there. It seems at the moment like he's showing opposing views and views in between, but maybe I'm reading it wrong. Haven't wandered over to the end game yet. Also a weird video with the guy walking with the candle that definitely has a puzzle in it (that you can solve?). It's funny, I could tell that the video was Russian in moments.

It's a very pretty game. It's an odd contrast. It looks lively, but it's still and quiet. Would be nice if there was a more direct story involved with characters walking around.

Edit: Also, now that this game is wrapped up, hopefully that Twelve Minutes game will come out soon.

If you guys read the Game of Thrones / Ice & Fire books and did a podcast series on it, that would be...awesome.

Also Kingkiller.
