@a_turtle: Like Vinny said, it's a topic that needs more time to actually address, and if he'd given me 10 words instead of 5, I probably would've phrased it differently.
All I know is that the film's structure and characterization is unlike most contemporary sci-fi films, which has led most of the people to whom I recommend the movie to report back that the movie was too slow, that the characters were too unlikable, that there isn't enough action, and that the world's lore isn't developed enough. But lot of those reasons are why I like it! So it's really not "I can't recommend it," it's "this is my favorite movie but hey, tell me a little bit about what sort of movies you like so that I can have some idea of whether you'd like this or not."
@neohelbeast: Thanks! This stuff is the best. I'd TOTALLY forgotten about Infinity Daggers, and now I wonder if that's what made me a Cypher player in the Dreamcast release of the game!
Also: Yeah, I never put the time in to learn Bal Bados, so I KNEW some big Oratan fan would be ashamed at my playing, but I had to show him off anyway!
Thanks for the great comment. Feel free to PM me any links you think I'd dig! (BTW: I actually have an account over on Oratan.com, where I did a lot of lurking around the release of Force!)
@christaran: It gets to be both a thing I said as a joke and also something I'd like to speak more deeply about. Those things aren't mutually exclusive, and doing the latter doesn't turn the act of the former into something terrible. There's always room for nuance.
@please_love_me: Yeah! It was one of those things I immediately started thinking about the second after it left my mouth. I normally go way out of my way to prevent myself from thinking about those I disagree with as less-than-human. A long term frustration for me is the way we call people "monsters," even in the cases of some of history's most terrible people. It's much more productive to think those we disagree with--and even those who do awful things--as people, and to figure out how the hell they became who they became. So I'm on page with you!
