Game Of The Year 2017 Users Choice

What a great year for video games! Even though we think it's all about to end due to horse armors, Micheal Transactions, always online policies or other crap, we were still treated to some awesome games this year.

Before I go into my actual list, here are some other 2017 games I've only partly played / I am still playing, but were also not top 10 material:

  • Zelda Breath of the Wild: I'm ~8 hours in, and this game just has not grabbed me (yet). Not fun stamina meter, one hit kills, can't swim, breaking weapons, motion controls... Since it's universally praised, this is probably my own fault.
  • Sonic Mania: This is the best Sonic I've played in a long time, but not GotY good though.
  • Hob: Interesting world design, but this game is not GotY material though. Still it's sad to see Runic games shutdown :(
  • Battle Chasers: Night War: I bounced off this game due to a save corrupting bug in the PS4 version when it was released. Airship Syndicate was really great with their communication and fixing it. I just haven't had the time to jump back into it.

And my pile of shame (aka backlog) of 2017 releases are:

  • Assassin's Creed Origins: Looks really promising can't wait to look into that.
  • Prey: Wrote this game off when it was released, but there was a lot of buzz during the end of this year so picked it up (together with Death of the Outsider.)
  • Dishonored 2: Death of the Outsider: While Dishonored 2 is still on my pile of same from last year, I loved the original Dishonored enough to get this as well.

Honorable mention to:

  • Middle-earth: Shadow of War: Ignore the story and the stupid loot boxes. Just have some fun killing Orcs.

So with that out of the way, here are my top 10 games of 2017.

List items

  • Without a doubt the absolute game of the year. The world created by Guerrilla is gorgeous and amazing. But apart from the world design, it had a great story with believable and well acted characters. Massive variety and freedom for creativity in combat encounters. If you've missed it due to badly timed new console release, you should definitely check it out.

  • Metroidvania meets Dark Souls. I could not stop playing this game. Untill I met that last boss *grumbles* I hate you Radiance! But I've put over 40 hours into it, so it must be worth it, right? :-)

  • OMG, just look at it, it's gorgeous! Just as Hollow Knight another game I lovingly keep cursing at ;-)

  • Who would have thought they could put out another Uncharted so fast and it being so good! I can play one of these every year. Great acting, story, setting, etc.

  • Is this Indie now? Looks awesome, amazing acting and takes on a heavy subject as well. I cried.

  • Another game I put a lot of hours in this year. Even though it had some quirks, it also got a lot of heart.

  • I laughed so hard at that moment! Put it on easy an just have fun killing Nazis and see the great story and alternate reality MachineGames created.

  • Got a Switch because of the high praise for this game. While I'm probably more frustrated with it then a lot of the Nintendo fans out there. But despite the awful motion controls, I can't deny there is still a lot of fun the be had in there.

  • So charming, so addicting, so fun. Why did it have to end so soon.

  • This year they released a massive expansion: War of the Chosen. I played through the entire campaign again. Playing this and watching The Exquisite Corps was great fun this year. Hope the East crew will try to take on XCOM 2 one day.
