Cargo! What who what where?

I know many of you are confused or "dumfounded", perhaps even scared, by Cargo. I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't be and to help you understand the madness.
Now I haven't played this game yet but I'm familiar with Ice-Pick Lodge's (the developer) previous releases Pathologic and The Void. I could write about them but I'd wouldn't do a better job than the reporters at Rock, Paper, Shotgun (RPS) who have done an awesome job. Here are some links:

  • Site of the developer Ice-Pick Lodge –  http://www.ice-pick.com/index_eng.htm
  • Interview with Ice-Pick Lodge, by RPS – http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/02/03/rps-interviews-ice-pick-lodge/
  • A "review" of Cargo, by RPS –  http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/04/27/cargo-the-quest-for-gravity-review/
  • A "review" of Cargo, by RPS –  http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/09/29/wot-i-think-the-void/
  • Analysis / critic of Ice-Pick Lodge's first game Pathologic –  http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/04/10/butchering-pathologic-part-1-the-body/

Hopefully this will increase interest in an unkown, under-the-rader developer with great aspirations and ideas. If you've got any questions you should hit me up!

The main trouble with The Void is that it is hard in very unexpected ways. It is not a twitch game, so you can play the game for hours without ever encountering anything that you would classify as hard, in fact the game feels quite easy and relaxing. And then of course you die because you ran out of color. The game only gives you vague hints on how to manage color properly, absolutely no real guidance or tutorial and doesn't even give feedback when you did something wrong, so it can get really frustrating and require multiple hours and restarts from scratch to figure out how to exactly play the game. (Little quick tutorial: Colors in your heart influence how much color you use up for certain tasks, thus having the wrong colors in your heart can screw you up, as you will run out of color without a way for recovery).

The sad part is that even once you figured it out, it is still not really that great of a game mechanic, as the constant micromanagement of filling colors from one container into the other can get quite tedious and annoying. The worldmap also felt kind of broken, as spending time on the worldmap converts color and thus makes looking around on the worldmap to find the next task pretty much impossible, I found myself constantly quicksaving when entering the worldmap, then searching for the next task, then quick loading to not waste a single second on the search.

That said, the atmosphere in that game is easily among the best I have ever seen in any game ever and for that alone the game is an absolute must play. To lower the difficulty one can use a walkthrough, an easy patch (as the game doesn't have build in difficulty settings) or just plain old console cheats, which I would actually recommend in this game, as there is little point in wasting countless hours in trying to figure it out without a little help. So the difficulty should really not stop anybody from playing it.

In short this is basically the worst and the best game I have played in quite a while, both at the same time.

PS: In Germany the game is ultra cheap, sells for 3€ on Amazon.de.
