Five Stars for Butcher Bay, Four for Dark Athena [spoiler on 2nd half of Dark Athena] 0

Escape from Butcher Bay is one of my favorite games, especially so for the prison elements, atmosphere and combat. There are annoying bits, true (The Pit and the Mines come to mind), but it's a fantastic game.Dark Athena is a great sequel, but could never really live up to Butcher Bay, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the first part of the game, where you're on the spaceship proper. You have a central hub area of sorts, from which you go to different parts of the ship with the goal of getting off...

Great story but not a fan of the mechanics 0

Just beat this today, and while it was entertaining on the whole, I never really got comfortable with the mechanics and how they come together in the gameplay. I never really had enough ammo to gun my way through, and while you might think that's a motivator to use the Darkness powers in at least a supplementary role, I found them cumbersome and inefficient. You can enter into these finishing move animations that give you pickups, but meanwhile you can't get hurt. Fine, but the animations take ...

Quite Possibly the Greatest RPG of the 90s, Given a Decent Shot 0

Playing Fallout today can be, in a word, daunting. The game's graphics and isometric camera angle scream "90s," and the game's mechanics have long been extinct in the games that have come out recently. However, if you give Fallout a decent chance, without any preconceived notions of what the game should be like, then you'll find an amazing game hidden under some 90s dust.I've had an on-and-off relationship with Fallout for many years now, as dumb as that may sound. As a teengaer, I picked up bo...

A Faithful Update of the Original and Source Versions of Counter-Strike 0

Much has been said about Counter-Strike, but most people know it as "that competitive FPS". That it remains one of the most popular games on Steam testifies to its popularity, even after all these years and accompanying genre changes. In an industry of respawns and kill-streaks, Counter-Strike is unusually ascetic; there is a comparably low, if even existent amount of persistence in the game, and the only reward a successful player receives is more money to buy weapons and armor. Counter-Strike...

Probably the most innovative MoH game in a while--too bad it doesn't last 0

The idea of entering battles from the sky, especially in games, is relatively new. The 101st Airborne was, to my knowledge, the first group of soldiers to do so in WWII, and now, with MoH: Airborne, we have the opportunity to fight as they did, albeit with much less risk and reality. What follows is a very innovative mechanic that, sadly, doesn't save the game from being a middling experience.Airborne's most touted feature--gimmick, some would say--is the ability to enter a level from the sky, ...

The definitive Hitman experience 0

I've held off on writing a review for Blood Money for a while, solely because I found it hard to put into words the excellence with which it pulls off its intended goals. However, with my recent playthrough of Absolution, I felt I needed to explain just to what degree Blood Money succeeds in embellishing the best that the Hitman series has to offer. After Hitman: Contracts, it isn't hard to see why many Hitman fans were dismayed with how the Hitman series was progressing. After the challenging, ...

Any Bond game is a good Bond game, and Blood Stone sure does satisfy. 0

I'd like to get something out straightaway; I'm a self-confessed Bond-fan; I've seen every movie, played most every game, and just love to death the franchise as a whole. When I heard about Blood Stone, I knew I had to get it, and, to tell the truth, it was well worth the price. BS is your typical third-person action shooter. It borrows every mechanic and concept from previous third-person hallmarks, such as Gears of War's cover system and Splinter Cell Conviction's Mark-and-Execute system. One...

Alpha Protocol, with its intriguing story, multiple methods of completion, and astounding customization, is...good. 0

Alpha Protocol is one of those games that is almost there, but fails, and fails hard, on a few aspects that mark the game as bad. Despite this, I gave Alpha Protocol an 8.0 for a few reasons as follows.Story-wise, Alpha Protocol is hard to beat. You've got your secret agent, Michael Thorton, tasked with taking down a corrupt arms-dealer accused of selling to terrorists and starting a cold war to boost their profits. The plot might sound a little "24-ish," and certainly its been done to death be...

With Mass Effect 3, the epic, spanning narrative finally comes to an end. But is this a good thing? 0

The Mass Effect games were almost immediately elevated to the halls of RPG perfection with the release of the first game, which not only incorporated great gameplay and action, but an interactive story with real, measurable consequences based on your decisions throughout the game. Mass Effect 2 built upon this formula, streamlining the gameplay and offering up a great continuation to the story established in the first game. Now, with Mass Effect 3, the player reaches a metaphorical "precipice,"...

A Short-Form Space-Faring Game that Truly Captures Your Imagination 0

FTL is a game unlike any I've ever played. On the surface, the game seems simple enough; you act as the commander of a vessel, controlling every crew member, every weapon, and every decision you come upon. You'll come across pirates looking to scuttle your ship, rebel fighters trying to take down your government, and civilians in need of your assistance; whether you give it or not is totally up to you. In fact, this is one of the main themes of FTL: choice. There's always a choice, even if ever...

Forget Fallout 3; this is the definitive Fallout experience 0

Before I start the review, I'd like to point out that I played the game with every piece of DLC installed as found in the Ultimate Edition. As such, my experiences, and thus my opinion of the game, may differ from your own. Fallout New Vegas, with all due credit to Bethesda, is better than Fallout 3. Obsidian, the developers of the game, took what was great about Fallout 3 and improved it, while getting rid of some parts that just didn't fit. As a result, Fallout New Vegas, more than just an ex...

Hotline Miami is a stylistic, gory top-down game, and certainly one of the top games of 2012. 0

Hotline Miami, compared to the triple-A titles released this year, may seem to pale in contrast. It's pixelated style is reminiscent of 8-bit shooters, and its gameplay is technically quite simple. If we examine solely the mechanics of the game, Hotline Miami might seem to be nothing more than an amateur Flash game. Looking at the game in its entirety, however, it becomes apparent that Hotline Miami is one of the most amazing games ever created.Hotline Miami tasks you, an unnamed protagonist, w...

Absolution is a great game; sadly, it isn't a great Hitman game 0

Hitman: Absolution tries to be something it shouldn't. Instead of following the conventional Hitman approach of silence, stealth and subtlety, it opts instead for thrills and action, not exactly failing, but not exactly succeeding either. The prologue mission is, sadly, a tease, and it's a cruel one at that. Though not exactly fresh off of Blood Money, the previous entry in the series, I came into Absolution expecting at least the option, if not the suggestion, of being stealthy. The prologue m...
