  • Since PUBG started gaining traction back in 2017 the Battle Royale game type has gripped me. The genres visceral, unrelenting and challenging nature created experiences I've never had in over 20 years of gaming. Initially I gave Fortnite a try, but disliked the building, moved to PUBG where I found a home for a while but its jenky gameplay and frequent glitching kept me from unfettered enjoyment. Admittedly I was skeptical of Apex at first with there being hero classes with unique abilities but after playing a couple rounds it was clear that I had found the Battle Royale for me.

My love of this game starts with its solid movement, gunplay and overall feel while running around the environment. Sliding, jumping around buildings and cover and bounding your way through firefights feels effortless and second nature. The controls are comfortably natural and you rarely stumble reacting to different situations that present themselves in the course of battle. Very seldom do you find yourself thinking the game was at fault for your death and not your own execution during an altercation. The guns feel great too, Apex offers a well balanced variety of firearms to choose from which provide certain advantages and disadvantages for a multitude of situations you find yourself in. Obviously everyone has there favorites and the meta will dictate which are statistically best but its clear that just about all of them are viable if applied to the right encounter. Additionally the attachments system in Apex changed the game, having auto attachment and color coded rarity was a great introduction and the mod system also adds a lot of variety to an already robust arsenal.

  • There was quite a buzz around this game when I first heard of it sot it was clear that I needed to see what the fuss was about. I made sure I went in blind as that is largely what people suggested during their endorsements of the game and I am glad I took the advice. Outer Wilds is a game that would suffer if its mysteries were known as a lot of its fun is figuring out exactly what is going on and how to progress.

The game's aesthetic pulls it all together, a beautifully crafted universe with interesting planet designs with varying properties and mechanics that all fit together perfectly. Landing on a new planet was a mix of wonder and excitement, speculating on how each one fit into the games engineered structure. Additionally the sound design is perfect for the setting, frightening and awesome at the same time. I can remember moments in this game vividly and I think it has a lot to do with how they tied everything together with sound and music.

When it is all said and done Outer Wilds is a fantastic experience I think everyone should try. The discovery of all this game has to offer is a truly worthwhile experience with moments of pure awe and wonder. On top of the great gameplay and wonder Outer Wilds has some pretty interesting things to say philosophically. It’s a complete package and I suspect that games will pull from this playbook for years to come, it's truly something special and sets itself apart as something that hasn't really been done before.

  • I'd only recently tried out the Monster Hunter franchise when World came out in 2018. I fell hard for its structure, creature design and gameplay and found myself playing late into the end game crafting up all the armor sets and weapons I could. After hearing of a new free Monster Hunter clone I had to see for myself if they could capture the magic of its inspiration.

Dauntless has some great creature design and an overall interesting look, bright and cartoon like, which I really came to enjoy. The biomes look good but need some more detail to really pop, smaller fauna and more varied flora would add a lot and seems to bring Monster Hunters areas more to life. Overall its a very pleasant visual experience with intense fights highlighted by flashy effects.

Gameplay follows a similar format to Monster Hunter and you hunt your way up the food chain fighting bigger and tougher monsters thus building better weapons and armor as you go. The game offers multiple weapon types that vary the moves you are able to do also similarly to Monster Hunter, each weapon I tried felt unique though I had my favorite I stuck with.
