Breadfan's Bread Basket #9: Silent Hills of Bread

As some of you may have noticed from this thread a few days ago, I have gotten a Wii. I was actually fairly surprised when I got it myself as a birthday gift from my aunt and uncle about a week ago. I honestly had a very slim interest in buying a Wii for myself, but I had always planned on getting one eventually. Anyway, thanks in part to the Giant Bomb community, I have compiled a list of Wii titles to play. At the moment the only two games I own are Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, along with a few Virtual Console games such as Super Mario World and Donkey Kong

Silent Hill, seeming very interesting from the Quick Look, quickly caught my eye as a game that I needed to play for myself. Once I actually began to play the game I fell in love with how the game creates a very lively atmosphere that sucks you into the creepy world of Silent Hill. The motion controlled flashlight may come off as a gimmick, but serves as a great way to immerse the player into the world. The game also creates a great sense of urgency and for the lack of a better term, an OH FUCK feeling when you are being pursued by faceless monsters. So far I have only played about two or three hours of Silent Hill, but it is already a fantastic experience.

Now I know that some people have a negative opinion of rail shooters, and honestly I can see where they are coming from, but I am a sucker for light gun games. I have always loved Time Crisis and the House of the Dead games. So being a Resident Evil fan, I bought myself Darkside Chronicles without much hesitation. Like many users mentioned in the thread above, the game does start out rather slow but slowly begins to take stride as the game progresses. I found the shaky camera interesting and something unique to these sorts of games, but it also serves as a double edged sword. Sure it creates a sense of immersion, but it can also be frustrating as hell. I can think of a few boss fights in particular that had me annoyed at the game because I was not able to shoot their weak point thanks to the Cloverfield-like camera system. Camera issues aside, Darkside Chronicles is a pretty good light gun game. The formula may not be too sophisticated, but Chronicles offers an interesting Resident Evil narrative as well as some classic series moments seen through a new lens.

So far my experience with the Wii has been very positive and I am throughly enjoying my time with it. Not to delve too deeply into fanboyism, but the Wii is a great console and the Wii hate that seems all too common on Giant Bomb is vastly unwarranted. Anyway, a friend of mine offered to let me borrow some other highly regarded Wii games such as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so I am eager to try those out as well.

Oh and Pokemon Heart Gold comes out in a few weeks. I guess I'll be spending a lot of time with my DS in the coming weeks.

Awesome stuff man.

It's a shame that my Wii is collecting dust, i have barely used it since we got it. I think i will get a few of the Resident Evil games for it, because it's no good if it's just sitting there. Resident Evil: DarkSide Chronicles looks like a game that i could very much enjoy. Although i don't know if it would compete with the House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return. I do awfully love those games :)

It's not that the Wii doesn't have some great games.

The issue is that for every great game on the Wii, 8 are minigame collections and 2 are just awful games. It's the issue that online play might as well not exist on the Wii, and in a way doesn't, for the most part. The issue is that for every 5 AAA titles you get on the other consoles, you get one on the Wii.

The good Wii games are great, no doubt about it, but being a Wii owner is like having an abusive boyfriend. Every once and awhile he'll tell you he loves you, and takes you out to Arby's for a delicious sandwich, but the majority of the time he's beating you and locking you in the basement.

You should also get Dead Space Extraction. I heard it's a great horror game also.

@Mmmslash: I can totally see where you are coming from and I would agree, but a lot of people seem to hate on the Wii without any real justification. Like I said though, I usually stray away from the whole topic of console fanboyism, but I just don't think the Wii deserves the hate is seems to get on Giant Bomb.

@Jeust: That is on my list of games to buy. I was actually going to get it the other night, but I figured one rail shooter was enough for the moment.

Nice write up. It's cool that you're enjoying your Wii. I just like having options when playing video games. If I had a choice, I would own all three current gen consoles. But my Xbox 360 and Wii serve me well.

I thought Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was a kick ass experience. I beat it in a little under 9 hours. But I automatically found myself on a second play-through just to see what changed, plus having the knowledge of the story. Really cool game.

I still haven't tried a light gun game on  the Wii. I'm thinking of getting Dead Space: Extraction, really liked Dead Space on my 360. I liked the Dead Space universe as well. And at the low price of $19.99/US, I should get that.

Good gaming and have fun.

How is this in any way different from PS2, SNES or PC gaming, hm?

Also, in 2009 I spent more time with the Wii than with the 360.

I love my Wii exclusives...I'm just sad to see that a lot of them are way, way under performing in comparison to the mountains of mini-game collections. Granted there has been a general shift away from the mini-game collection, but still the awesome, not necessarily mature, Wii games still seem to never do as well.
I'm also constantly frustrated at Nintendo only believing that Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are their only 1st party franchises. They have a smorgasbord of awesome IP and they keep churning those three out. Not that I'm saying the recent games in those franchises are bad, but it wears thin after a while you know? Let people crave that new Mario and Zelda for another year or two and instead give us a new DK, Earthbound, Pikmin, Star Fox, or make something brand new! These guys were the leaders in crazy weird IP and now it is always just Wii something, your new character is the Mii.

@neoepoch: I agree. Nintendo certainly has plenty of titles that they could reboot or expand on. If anything, I would love a new full blown Pokemon game for the Wii. One can hope.

@Meowayne:  With SNES, PS2, and PC gaming, you're not going  months between solid releases.

Again, some of my favorite games are on the Wii, and it certainly has it's place in the console market, I'm just saying for the average, run of the mill gamer who buys the major titles that interest them, the Wii is kind of a rough market.
