GOTY 2019

List items

  • Sekiro does two things exceptionally well. Firstly, the game showcases how good From Software is at making a Souls-like game. It is their forte and Sekiro is a fantastic one of those.

Second, Sekiro showcases how good From Software is at making something that is completely different from everything they've made before.

Sekrio is at once both a continuation of From Software's development efforts on their Dark Souls series, and a complete rethinking from the ground up of what the goals of the Souls series were and how they should be achieved.

  • Wandersong is an incredible game about working hard to carry on in the face of adversity, trying to always stay positive, supporting those you love, even when you don't know how, and never giving up on yourself, even when it feels like the world is going to fall apart. I cannot explain how much this game means to me without getting into some pretty extreme spoilers, but it is completely worth playing.

  • While The Outer Worlds doesn't necessarily do anything new with the Mass Effect meets Fallout launchpad it's starting from, it does manage to build an interesting world, good characters, and fun mechanics. It doesn't reach the heights of some other games in the freedom they offer, but it does do everything it tries very well.

  • Resident Evil is a fairly sizable blind spot for me. I never played a single Resident Evil until Resident Evil 4 came out on the wii of all things. Since then, I've passed on every single RE game until the RE2 remake this year.

Resident Evil 2 feels like a brand new game in a lot of ways. If I hadn't known ahead of time that it was a remake, I would have never suspected it. It's beautiful, grotesque, and a joy to play.

  • At first, I thought Forager was going to be another craft-a-lot grindfest, but the game is so much more charming than that. It unfolds in a fun, organic way and the upgrades all feel exceptionally satisfying. In a way it is a grindfest, but it is one I happily continued with.

  • The little solar system and cobbled together feel of the technology in this game make it an incredible idea. The horrible controls and frustrating "start from the beginning if you die" mechanic makes this a game I would love to see fully, but not play fully.

  • I've had a weird relationship with Devil May Cry over the last few years. I enjoyed DMC 3 and 4 quite a bit, but when Platinum came out with Bayonetta, they ate Capcom's lunch. Bayonetta is just a smoother game and the characters are just as fun.

Devil May Cry 5 is the first game in the series, by my estimation, to really learn from modern game trends. Combat has a much smoother flow than previous entries in the series, but it also doesn't go quite as far as Bayonetta did. It retains a very specific feel that Platinum didn't go for in its games.

  • Apex Legends is only really on this list because I can't make it to 10 games without it. While I recognize how well the game is made, the Battle Royale game mode in a shooter just isn't really my thing as much anymore. I dumped way too much time into PUBG when it first released, but I don't have that kind of time anymore. I don't have the crew to play with anymore. I enjoyed the time I had with Apex, but it quickly fell off my plate in favor of other experiences.
