No joke, Abby's the only other person I've ever heard using the same "G for Ground, C for Ceiling" thing that I was taught as a kid. And it's weird, because I'm 40, and she's a widdle baby Millennial person.
Also, the The Fidelio Incident is my least favourite Guns N' Roses album.
@2mello: Heh, spooky timing, because I've been revisiting the Illbleed Super Replay all week!
@humanity:For real, Fluke's Risotto (the album that track is from) is one of my all-time favourite albums, electronic or otherwise. And I've been an FSOL fan since 1994, when I first watched the Lifeforms video. So yeah, 2097 has a very strong soundtrack in my eyes... er, ears (although I might even like Fusion more).
But in terms of a cohesive whole, the art and the gameplay and the soundtrack of Wip3out come together in a way that is faultless to me. 2097 is the bratty, snarling punk of the franchise (which is still very much a good thing); the follow up is the groomed, sleek überdesign that befits the futurecraft you're racing.
Nah, Wip3out is the best game in the franchise, and you know I mean that shit because I used the nonsense title.
It has the best tDR designs and art direction (although probably not if you prefer their more colour-explosion-in-Japan look), the best soundtrack (curated by Sasha, who also wrote five exclusive tracks for it, and included the mighty "Xpander" on top of that), and the most interesting mechanics (risk/reward of boost management, more weapon types, offensive/defensive weapon pads). Plus it runs in the PlayStation's high-res mode, while maintaining a silky-as-fuck framerate.
I am very much pro-N64 on the F-Zero front, though; GX is fucking rad as well.
Between this and Dangerous Golf, it feels like Three Fields are trying to get people to pay for tech demos of stuff they intend to put into a proper game-ass game.
Also, part of the appeal of previous crash modes is that you're causing mayhem in a real world environment; doing everything you can to reinforce the idea that the player is in a simulation doesn't seem as fun. Nobody thinks the VR missions are the best bit of Metal Gear Solid.
