Attack Of The Anti-Chobots!

A Mass Effect 3 Voice Cast promotional video appeared on Giant Bomb recently, unleashing a torrent of hatred for Jessica Chobot in the comments. Ms. Chobot, who does voice work in the game, is a staff writer and on-screen host for IGN. She is probably best-known on the Internet for a series of parody glamor shots for the Sony PSP, including one of her licking the device. I posted a comment in her defense and received a couple of PMs in reply. One GBer thought I needed to raise my standards and suggested that I pick up a drunk college girl in a bar instead. The other was more polite, patiently explaining to me that the gaming community resented Ms. Chobot's system-licking her way to the top.

I saw those photos years ago. Here's how I think it went down: A very capable writer with an interest in gaming casts her satiric eye on the hype surrounding the PSP and decides to skewer it, Madison-Avenue-style. She happens to be hot, so she doesn't need to hire a model for the satirical photos she has in mind. She posts her pics on the Interwebs, not realizing that the gaming community is so filled with thwarted testosterone that it will hardly notice there's a PSP in the shot. Instant, unintentional celebrity ensues. As a result, this capable writer is hired by a video game review site and gets the chance to show her real chops, which she does.

I think what really irks gamers about Jessica Chobot is that their own sexual obsessions unwittingly opened industry doors to her. Seen in that light, all this catcalling seems a little mean-spirited, doesn't it?

I don't follow Chobot, so the only thing I know about her is that she's one of the many female game journalists that seem to undermine taking female game journalists seriously, by having pictures of them in bikinis as the first thing that pops up when you google for them or having websites where their face takes up about 90% of the screen with a link to a gallery full of more headshots and some sexy shots and then there is a little tiny box somewhere that says "oh and I like pac-man and am a nerd lol". I don't know the story behind the shots and the appearances in men's magazines. I only know that what I get when I google her name (I know, not always under your control at all) versus when I google other game industry people's names is very different.

I can't find any website for Jessica Chobot (but spreads in Maxim and Askmen seem to be the top result for her name), but other examples are the regular guest/host on Weekend Confirmed ( http://www.andrearene.com ) and Raychul Moore (http://www.raychul.com/), who is a frequent guest on the Bitmob Mobcast. One looks like the website of a girl who just wants to be the next darling host of some cheesecake television show like Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight and the other looks like a porn site - or a men's magazine, to be generous. This has no reflection on what kind of people they might be. I'm sure they're wonderful and they certainly seem to hold their own on the podcasts. But we're all grown-ups here and we know what you're trying to capitalize on, there.

Compare that to Veronica Belmont (http://www.veronicabelmont.com/), Jeff Canatta (http://jeffcannata.com/), Justin McElroy (http://justinmcelroy.wordpress.com) Jeff Gerstman (http://blog.jeffgerstmann.net/), Carrie Gouskos (occasional guest on GiantBomb) and others. Notice a difference in the focus and style and content of the sites above and the sites in this paragraph?

That isn't to say that you can't be sexy or feminine or have other aspects to your life, but that if you're going to in some way exploit your gender and assets to promote yourself, then you're going to need to work much harder to be taken seriously. Morgan Webb is an example of someone who has accomplished that and I'm sure it was no small task to overcome. I have friends who are journalists at CNN and CBS and in order to retain their credibility, they don't go around doing sexy photo shoots or posting galleries on facebook of themselves hitting a bong or boozing it up while grinding a banister in a toga.

As for the concept of someone "licking their way to the top". Well, that isn't unprecedented. I have no idea what her claim to fame is, but I know that if you take a site or video stream that is centered around gaming and filled with high quality content, it will not do as well as a site or video stream that is filled with inane and useless content, but has a cute female (doesn't even have to be unusually attractive) as the center attraction. That's just life and I normally don't hear guys whining about how unfair it is that they have to work harder because they don't have tits and therefore can't acquire the same instant following. And, for that matter, I don't hear girls who don't do those sort of things whining about it, either. They just produce great content and hope they're acknowledged for that.

That said, I'm quite delightfully attracted to beautiful women and love intelligent game journalists. So I won't dismiss someone straight off. If Chobot is a great journalist, then her failure was in doing something sarcastically that could easily be taken out of context in the future and be mistaken for all the other "look at my boobies, I'm a game journalist" people out there and that's unfortunate. Seems like one would have seen that coming, though. I mean, if she were 220lbs and really funky looking, then the "humor" of "look at me licking game stuff with my tongue while all wet from a pool and wearing a bikini!" would have been obvious. Being really attractive and doing that just makes it easily mistaken for every other girl doing the same thing.

Welcome to the world of prepubescent little twats being angry for no reason and making up dumb lies like "She's only popular because of her looks" and stuff like that without even actually knowing what it is she does and what sort of stuff she's done before.

Only problem I have with her being in ME3 is that she looks terrible in the Unreal Engine combined with Bioware's modelers.

If you google someone's name and the first page of google results is provocative photo shoots and links to men's magazines, what would you presume they actually do? If I googled David Jaffe and got back a page full of links to Lady's Home Journal and photo shoots of him in a speedo, I probably wouldn't recognize him as a celebrated game developer, either.

Granted, that doesn't excuse people being assholes or being excessively and unfairly crude, but let's not dismiss how people present themselves as being significantly responsible for how they are received. Especially on the surface (in the same way that someone might see a photo shoot of Morgan Webb and assume she's just a dumbass television host reading off a card, but in reality is quite an accomplished journalist/reviewer in her own right).

Sorry for putting the Jaffe image out there. That's going to take some therapy.

Oh you're totally right, but I would take it a step further and actually research what the person is all about and try and figure out a little more instead of just jumping to some weird conclusion just because "girls aren't allowed!" in this little club of gamers.
And I'm almost 100% certain that David Jaffe posing in a speedo is just what he calls "Monday". :P

Before the ME3 thread was made I did not know who, or what a Jessica Chobot was (I would have guessed a robotic Jessica Rabbit).  I'm still not feeling particularly enlightened now that I know.

While I have no strong feelings one way or the other towards Chobot, I found it amusing to think that the scenario where you meet Chobots character was similar to the Reporter incident in Mass Effect 2. So no, some of us don't hate Chobot, but we love Mass Effects' whole "Press RT to do some gangster shit" shtick.

Yeah that PSP thing was only a one time thing, people blow it way out of proportion. She never used her sexuality to get ahead ever again. It's her journalistic integrity that got her that ME3 role! Haters can just deal with it!

Maybe that is the case. Nevertheless, I don't want to go quietly into that dark night. Of all the sites I've ever enjoyed, I had hopes this audience was one of the more educated.

I definitely agree. Hopefully my comments above made it clear that my perception of Chobot is entirely based on hearing her name a few times, seeing her pop up on the XBOX dashboard a few times, and googling her and that is absolutely it. In no way am I commenting on the quality of her other work. And, like I mentioned, the other people in my topmost post in this thread that I refer to as examples of "look at me! boobies! I'm a game nerd!" actually have something to say, when I've heard them. Just that you wouldn't know it from what they are clearly working to put out there.

If you can manage to be sexy, enjoy doing that (or even exploiting it - I mean, if I could do that, I would, too and you'd be dumb not to use everything you can for your own success), and still have something else significant to offer, then that is fucking fantastic. It would be kind of absurd for me to suggest that you should either be "serious game person" or "hot photo spread chick". Just know that being one may require much more work to overcome being sen as only that. And then don't get upset if people make a big deal about how attractive you are, etc. My guess is that Chobot gives zero fucks and is pretty solid about what she does, though.

I think we're a long time from this being irrelevant, but I hope that doesn't keep women from throwing their voices into the fray.

Well, she appeals to a demographic that Bioware is obviously targetting with the latest entry in their space-dating-sim series: horny teenage nerds. Bioware now has to live with the less-enthusiastic comments coming from outside this demographic group. In short: it's a pretty cheap and transparent move.

She does look terrible in the game.

I don't follow Jessica Chobot, but I will give her credit for staying in the industry instead of jumping ship and slumming her semi-famous career as a host for Access Hollywood or whatever for the rest of her days. I don't hate her. I'm sure she's a wonderful person and has proven she knows the industry. However, I dislike the idea that most male gamers (and obviously herself, as well) thinks she's this supermodel when she isn't even close. She's attractive (in a dime-a-dozen sort of way), but the only reason she's even a "thing" to begin with is because she's in a certain part of the world that isn't known for its attractive women. I think if it weren't for video games or nerd culture in general, she would've been eaten alive by other, more attractive women. Same goes for some of the others, as well.

I don't think she's as bad as someone like Raychul Moore, a person that is under the delusion that she's a 9.5 when she's really a 6.5, and according to me, is only known for dressing up as Cammy and shacking it up with former-EIC of EGM Dan Hsu. I don't even know what she does for a living, honestly.

I really don't understand why so many people call Mass Effect a "dating sim". Even if it's meant as a joke, it is simply a bad a joke. The romance stuff is like 1% of the game, and is also optional. It's like calling Red Dead Redemption a poker simulator.

Holy fuck. How could you watch that video and come away wasting a single second contemplating Jessica Chobot? I'm sure she's not in any way detracting from the game and that trailer just brought me back into the Mass Effect hype (until just now, I haven't felt like I was itching to get it NOW). For all we know, Chobot went through the normal auditioning process to get the gig, too. It seems like a jump to assume that if Bioware was just going to randomly throw in "famous game chick" that they'd instantly go to Chobot . . . so I'm tending toward thinking there was more to it than that.

Also, Keith David. Yeah. That's the moment when the thrill of Mass Effect returned in a split second, for me. Holy. Fuck. Yes.

@ZeForgotten: Her fame is a result of her and G4's cashing in on gamer adolescents and their never-ending fascination with "woman + games".

I've watched some Jessica Chobot. She is at best a mediocre presenter with an irritating voice. I've read some Jessica Chobot. She is a terrible, terrible writer. Her opinion is as meaningless to me as a system wars post. Don't defend shitty journalism, or whatever one can call her writing.

However, don't exploit yourself and expect people to act like you didn't. There seem to be a lot of parallels between Chobot and Webb, yet the respect for Webb seems to be significantly greater. How is that possible if it's just morons running around screaming "girl durp durp!"?

I'm sure Ms. Chobot knew what she was getting into when she agreed to take this part. If she can live with the internet stupidity then I can ignore a bunch of idiots saying whatever. Although her character does look shitty in that video. Anyone who feels bothered about that, I say that's reasonable.

I didn't even know who he was, until you wrote that. I just assumed he was a voice actor. IMDB says he was in I Know What You Did Last Summer, fifteen years ago. So I guess I have seen him in one thing.

Well, she appeals to a demographic that Bioware is obviously targetting with the latest entry in their space-dating-sim series: horny teenage nerds. Bioware now has to live with the less-enthusiastic comments coming from outside this demographic group. In short: it's a pretty cheap and transparent move.

I really don't understand why so many people call Mass Effect a "dating sim". Even if it's meant as a joke, it is simply a bad a joke. The romance stuff is like 1% of the game, and is also optional. It's like calling Red Dead Redemption a poker simulator.

I called it that to express my disdain for how Bioware handles this stuff. It's like there are two important things in the ME universe: galaxy saving and dating. The romance stuff just feels formulaic at this point. I've got the impression that Bioware and fans alike are more concerned with the question of who will be the next possible love interests instead of the actual plot.

@Capstan: My only real problem is that Bioware went from having appearances from legitimate sci-fi icon like Marina Sirtis and Michael Dorn, and Tricia Helfer, to Jessica Chobot and Freddie Prince Jr.? And don't forget the Felicia Day they threw in between. Hey Bioware! Stop trying to make us see how cool you are by putting video game d-list internet celebrities and get some actual ACTORS we care about. How about some Mark Hamill or Brent Spiner. You know, people the sci fi community actually knows.

As far as the Seth Green goes then he also makes Robot Chicken which is alright in my book.

I'm sure they're wonderful and they certainly seem to hold their on on the podcasts. But we'll all grown-ups here and we know what you're trying to capitalize on, there.

Very well put. Bravo!

While I agree the romance stuff could be handled better, it's such a small, insignificant part of the games that I hardly feel like it's worth getting upset over.

YES. That would have been great in ME3.

Dear Internet: a woman can be beautiful as well as intelligent and multi-talented.

I want to live in your land of unicorns and free ponies. I kid.

However, don't exploit yourself and expect people to act like you didn't. There seem to be a lot of parallels between Chobot and Webb, yet the respect for Webb seems to be significantly greater. How is that possible if it's just morons running around screaming "girl durp durp!"?

I don't know, I just can't take anything seriously that's crawled out from under G4. Especially if it's from their line of  "Look! Tits!"  correspondents.

For all we know, Chobot went through the normal auditioning process to get the gig, too. It seems like a jump to assume that if Bioware was just going to randomly throw in "famous game chick" that they'd instantly go to Chobot . . . so I'm tending toward thinking there was more to it than that.

It's possible, but it doesn't seem likely to me.  She isn't an actress, yet, so I doubt she has an agent running around looking for auditions for her.  It's also more like Bioware's style these days to just try and get who they want for a part, rather than holding auditions.  I mean, Bioware didn't call Seth Green or Tricia Helfer's agent and ask if they wanted to audition for a part.  Bioware called their agents and asked if they wanted a job.

I'm sure Ms. Chobot knew what she was getting into when she agreed to take this part. If she can live with the internet stupidity then I can ignore a bunch of idiots saying whatever. Although her character does look shitty in that video. Anyone who feels bothered about that, I say that's reasonable.

Being irritated by the character model looking jacked up is a completely legitimate reason to be bothered with with Bioware, not Chobot.

I'm not saying I'm surprised that the internet had an overreaction. I'm not even saying that she shouldn't have to deal with the reaction. Regardless, I'm still irritated that people had such an inane response. I know, I know. It's the internet. But I can still lament that.

Hard to say, simply because Chobot doesn't have the same star profile as your examples. I would nevertheless assume that if her performance was atrocious they would have attempted to remedy that. The reality is, no one can really know at this point.

You're right on. I couldn't believe the idiotic and overblown response to the the news yesterday. Especially on this site. I really expected more from people around here. I was very sad to be proven a degree wrong.

Hah, well there's your mistake. Expecting anything above "fucking retarded" from the majority of users here is like expecting world peace :P

Maybe that is the case. Nevertheless, I don't want to go quietly into that dark night. Of all the sites I've ever enjoyed, I had hopes this audience was one of the more educated.

Sadly this community is full of cynical people who hate pretty much everything. It wasn't like this before. But it's what we've got now.

This whole thing is like someone complaining about an unpopped corn in a tube of lovely delicious popcorn.
