Top 10 Games of 2022

2022 was a better year for games than most let on. There was a lot of really good games usually with some flaws but overall I would say this was a pretty decent year for games. Before we get started with the list I will say yes I played Elden Ring and it was fun but not in my Top 10. Yes I did indeed play God of War Ragnarok it also did not make my top 10, the pacing in that game and the story really didn't hit with me making it probably my least liked God of War. There were a few games I didn't get enough time with this year that may have made the list like Chained Echoes but its a causality of time unfortunately. Now that we have that out of the way here are the best games of 2022.

List items

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 isn't just my Game of the Year it is one of the greatest video games ever created. From the story to the music to the improvements in gameplay from the previous entries Xenoblade is nearly the perfect video game. I don't want to spoil too much but Xenoblade has a lot to say about life, death and what happens in-between. A real dark story that will leave you laughing, crying, fearing and caring for this band of characters is crafted perfectly. The music oh the MUSIC! They really took the music up a notch for this entry. It is incredible and something you will want to listen to for years to come. The composer even made matching flutes to get the sound in the music more accurate with the actual flutes in the game. The combat is also really improved. This time its not so much a mmo bar you are dealing with but various buttons and many many classes. This game encourages you to switch classes often and each play incredibly uniquely. For these reasons and many more Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is my top game this year. Play it!

  • Triangle Strategy felt a little like if we got a tactics RPG for Game of Thrones. The story is engaging and brutal at times. There are several endings and a golden path that involves a lot of decisions and specific battle outcomes. The characters are really enjoyable to get to know and the tactics gameplay is superior to a lot that has come out since Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1. The HD-2D engine shines in this game and makes the game look absolutely perfect. If you like real tactics games this is one for you. The battles will leave you on the edge of your seat and the story will keep you wanting more.

  • There were two Pokémon games this year but this one left me thinking about it all year long. You are essentially transported to Feudal Japan where Pokémon are still a largely unknown entity. You are tasked with capturing and studying Pokémon among other things. This is the most fun I have had with a Pokémon game in years. You choose a region to go to and you explore the region capturing tons of Pokémon along the way. The capture mechanics are fast and fun. Each Pokéball actually feels different to throw and tends to make a huge difference in your capture chances. From the setting to the unique gameplay this is easily the best Pokémon (not only spin off but) entry in many years. It captures the essence of adventure and discovery and that makes it truly special.

  • This is easily the most beautiful game to come out probably ever. The world is huge and feels amazing to explore. One of the best open worlds I have ever played in its detail and variety are top tier. Horizon FW is an anticipated sequel to one of the best sci-fi stories in gaming. This game does not disappoint the story while not quite as engaging is still a very high bar. The gameplay continues to be fun knocking off robo dino parts and stealthing through the world. The side quests in this game are amazing they are almost as good as Witcher 3's side quests which is really saying something. Each one feels really important. Highly highly recommend this sequel.

  • If you know me you know I tend to like older shooters. Prodeus is the most perfect representation of the older shooter genre that I have ever seen. They nailed the look, feel, sound perfectly. The pixelated look is the cherry on top that really sealed it for me so many other indie fps try but never quite can nail it. The game is fast and frantic which is how they should be. It has a very cool setting and it nails the moment to moment gun play that will keep you going to the next level till there are no more.

  • Dying Light one was quite the feat so I was skeptical the second game could beat my expectations. But soon as you get out into the city everything starts to click. A bit more rpg elements this time around and a huge gorgeously detailed city along with a compelling story had this game in my PS5 for a long time. Fun parkour and even good first person melee combat with gruesome limb, head, body dismemberments made the combat a gut punch in a dark world with little hope.

  • What a shocker when I loaded up this game how perfect it feels to play. There is no combat, just collecting, jumping and taking in the amazing world that was built. This game's moment to moment gameplay feel is superior to most games that came out this year. The perfect game feel combined with amazing little sound bites for collecting kept me glued to this game. The amazing 2d art style for the characters in a 3D world was also a incredibly nice touch. As far as 3d platformers goes this is one of the better ones in the last few years.

  • Platinum is at the top of their game again when it comes to pure action games. Bayonetta 3 feels like the end of the current trilogy and takes you on a Bayonetta Multiverse of Madness tour. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire ride and each mission kept me wanting more until the very end. Great set pieces really make this game rise above.

  • Do you want to go on a adventure? Do you want to grab a bunch of loot and get it appraised and watch the number of your growing empire of money go up and up and up? This is the game for you. This is one of the best Dragon Quest spin offs to date. Not only does it feel like you are going on a big fun open ended adventure but the gameplay loop is clear, fun and addictive. Its fun to just explore and see what happens and this game rewards that type of gameplay. Its the sorta adventure game I yearn for. Let me explore and let me be rewarded for never mainlining it to the next objective and this game does that very very well.

  • What can be said about Power Wash simulator? Its quite the surprise of the year. From the super satisfying water sounds to the ultra orgasmic feeling you get from cleaning dirt off of everything. Its a unique indie game that some might say started to popularize the simulator genre. Its easy mechanics but rewarding gameplay make it one of my top 10 this year.
