Top 10 Games of 2023

Was 2023 the best year in gaming? In my opinion no. But it was a pretty good year overall.

List items

  • Sam Lake is an artist at the top of his class. Alan Wake 2 is beyond amazing. We all had to wait so long for this sequel but it was worth the wait. Musical sequences, horror atmosphere, and a mind bending story.

The gameplay is much improved from the first one too. A mix of fighting shadow horrors and detective work. It’s quite the ride and you should try to avoid being spoiled as much as possible. A pure horrifying thrill ride.

  • This is the most impressive game graphically on next gen consoles. The gameplay is a pure gut punch of adrenaline. The story is one of suffering and holding on to hope of the future. It is a great Final Fantasy game even if it does cut out a lot of the rpg elements.

As a game alone without that history it’s easily one of the best this year. The combat is fun and quick and the boss fights are big! Some of the biggest you will have in gaming. This game will stick with you from beginning to end to even after you are done.

  • Purely fun. They smartly improved on Breath of the Wild. The ultra hand is a fantastic innovation alone with the ability to glue things together and fuse your weapons. Heck you can even move up through floors which feels like a hack. These smart innovations changed the games puzzles and dungeons in the right direction. The dungeons are also really improved on.

It is a fantastic package that is improved on every singe way from Breath of the Wild. The story is also really good that will have you feel the pain and suffering of Zelda. The game also has the best final Zelda boss/ dungeon of all time.

  • Dream game realized. Hogwarts is such a fun place to visit. It’s beautiful and magical and you can’t help but smile while you are there. The combat is super fun and smartly gives you a lot of interesting tools to work with.

The open world is cool to explore and discover things. The story is so much more than just going to Hogwarts and impressed me from the start.

  • This game graphically just looks simply amazing. True pixel art mastery. The music is jamming. The combat is a fun puzzle of weakness vs strength.

The story while some can say is a bit on the simple side it gives one of the greatest characters of the year Garl. Do not sleep on this to be RPG Classic.

  • From the music to the completely reworked fighting system for modern and classic players this is easily the best fighter in years. The fighting system is so smooth for newcomers and veterans alike they need to teach a class on how to do what they did.

It’s also full of content from a full city hopping rpg story mode, arcade and online there is something for everyone and no matter what mode you pick you will be in for a great time.

  • Someone finally made a true Jet Grind Radio game after all these years. So many just didn’t get it but this one does. I felt like I was transported back to the early 2000s and was playing Dreamcast again.

They even made some improvements like light combat and bosses. The music fits and is real good and the story is shockingly compelling.

  • This is the second best 2D Mario game and I played them all. It’s truly impressive what they were able to pull off here so many years later. Wonder is full of spectacle and Nintendo magic.

Each level is so unique and most of the time the mechanics in the level that will be the only level that uses it. That’s insane. It’s such a joy to play it’s truly one of my personal biggest surprises of 2023.

  • Square Enix are music masters. This game is a celebration of Final Fantasy music throughout the years. But if you get the dlc it’s a celebration of Square Enix music as a whole. They found a way to translate the rhythm gameplay from the DS to PS4/Switch very well.

The gameplay is fun and it even has lite rpg mechanics while you are playing the music. There are lots of rewards and quests to keep you busy while you celebrate the music mastery of Square Enix.

  • I love old shooters. Love them. Indie devs have been working to bring back the old shooters in their new games and this one does it so well. Not only is it really nice looking representation graphically but the cyberpunk setting is really cool too.

This one gave me some Gears vibes too with basically a Hammer of Dawn like weapon and a freaking chainsaw leg. You literally have a button you can press at anytime to chainsaw leg slide and remove your enemies in style. Masterfully done and creative.
