Megaten Game Ranking

Ranking of all the Megaten games I've completed.

Remaining games I'd consider playing:

  1. NINE (though emulation is pretty wack for it)
  2. V (but not on switch)

List items

  • (PS2)

Still the best persona game, and still the best version of P3. Certainly some bias on my part, but I feel it's still holds up to today's standards and is perfectly playable with some HD/widescreen mods if you're going the PC route. I've replayed it on PS2 and PC in recent years and had a great time.

Best story and characters regardless on how you may feel about the gameplay. Best waifus too (robo waifus ftw). Fuck portable and its rewriting of the story. FES is the only "enhanced" version of a Persona game to do it right by adding an epilogue rather than forcefully injecting new characters to the existing story.

(Ranking of base version cause fuck Marie; I gave up on Golden quick)

Honestly, on par with Persona 3 and a perfect complementary tale. Just that I preferred the heavier storytelling in P3. Great cast, and even better memes. The game is so vibrant and happy despite all the murdering xD

  • (3DS)

As with all SMT games, this one has a nice cast of characters, good plot, and a solid challenge. The best "traditional" SMT experience given its accessibility.

  • (3DS)

  • (3DS emulated)

Aside from the end dragging on and the final boss requiring heavy grinding, was solid. Alex is top tier waifu.

  • (PS3/PC)

    (Ranking of Persona 5 + P5R)

I ranked this higher after my first play-through, but after falling off early in my second play-through with Royal on PS4, and then forcefully pushing myself further a second time on PC... yea, not as great as the original hype-induced response I had after waiting for however many years it was.

While subjectively the story was the least interesting to me amongst the modern Persona titles, I think it objectively suffered from the game being so big. Everyone's issues this time around just started to seem like echoes of one another. Plus the game gave so many episodes of resolution for each character it lost meaning. The amount of content in this game as well makes the relatively simple narrative a mess.

While I was first skeptical of Royal, my opinion has flipped largely thanks to the new antagonist.

  • (PSX emulated, original JP)

Solid game if played on emulator; otherwise, the battle system and lack of save spots would be extremely tiring to get through.

I enjoyed the story and gameplay more than Persona 2 (IS+EP).

  • (3DS emulated)

Probably the easiest and most accessible SMT, not that it's a bad thing. The story was.. different... and I mean that in a negative way. Though it has some notably interesting characters which compensates for it somewhat. Overall, a decent SMT title.

  • (PC)

On the plus side, Ringo is one of my favorite characters in all of SMT. The other supporting characters are alright too i guess. But aside from that, the environments and dungeons are uninspiring. They took the designs from the 90s games and just made it 3D and third person. Like its all clearly just a grid systems with gray walls and no objects. The story was also on the weaker end. I'm happy Atlus gave attention to this series again, and gave a proper PC port on day one... but hopefully they put more love in the details next time.

  • (PSX emulated)

Same thoughts as Sin, but I rank this higher since (a) the adult cast is so much better, and (b) slight improvements to gameplay.

  • (PSX emulated)

From here on are games I wouldn't bother with unless you're just aiming to play them all. Otherwise, better to just watch a video summary.

The toughest title. Just a grind with minimal story and character. Magic is completely useless in this game since late game bosses just dodge magic 99% of the time, while it is 50/50 on regular enemies. The guardian system was neat though.

  • (PSP emulated)

Fairly standard. Nothing bad.. but nothing memorable either. At least if... had something weird about it's whole atmosphere and concept.

  • (PS2)

The only genre-breaking spin-off I bothered with in the SMT franchise... and yea, never again will I do that. Especially considering that this game was done when SMT wasn't even that popular, so it wasn't some cheap cash grab attempt.

  • (PSX emulated)

I heard great things about the story, so was quite disappointing. One half of the story is about a bunch of kids that had a misunderstanding and carried that with them for many years. This half of they story unfolds over the course of the game, at such a slow pace that doesn't work given how the build-up isn't worth the reveal. The other half of the story isn't any better, just a nonsensical story about a mismatch of elementary philosophical thought that isn't tied together in any meaningful way.

Would have been better if the childhood story part of the story was told faster, and the other half of the story had a strong direction.

I was holding out on playing this game in hopes of Atlus doing a remake, but given their track record and what I've seen so far about the P3 remake... I realized Atlus would just fuck up the remake anyways. But after completing the original PS1 version... how could you make it worse?

  • (PSX emulated)

    Same feelings as SMT II.

  • (PSX emulated)

Playing this made it quite apparent how the little improvements of future titles make such a different to the enjoyment. Pretty stale game-play where the only thing you ever use is taru/raku/mediarahan/atk. Also a lot of backtracking. Story was meh.
