GOTY 2012

I'm pretty sure I played more games this year than I've done before in just one year which is due to two reasons

1. I have been without a job for most of the year, which, as Rorie or Jeff could tell you as well, give you a lot and I mean a LOT of spare time where you don't have that much to do other than watch movies or play video games.

2. I have been a PS+ member since this May (I think), which I can't say I have regretted. Still, that also means most of the games I have been playing was released in 2011... I'll probarbly make a "best of PS+ of 2012" at some point, but in the meantime, here's the top 3 games I enjoyed most of 2012

List items

  • Such an overlooked gem. Remember in 2008 when small downloadable games all of a sudden became meaningful? Remember Braid? Castle Crashers? Bionic Commando Rearmned? Well, apparently people forgot the latter, because even though Pid is made by the people, who gave you BCR no one and I mean NO ONE seems to talk about this game. And what a shame that is.

From it's crisp, vibrant design to the catshy music and the responsive controls, I enjoyed every second of it. Couple that with the fact that it took me over 8 hours to complete the game and you have one of the most complete and fun games I've played all year. It just kept surprising me with new challenges and gameplay mechanics until the very end. Sure, the gaming industry may be getting some "cutsy-indie-platformer-definied-only-by-one-gimmick" fatigue over the past year, but believe me when I say, there's a lot more to Pid than a simple tractor beam-gimmick.

  • The reason Journey is on my list is because of it's seamless integration of multiplayer. The joy of having another person with you to share this masterful achievement that is Journey, is one of the greatest gaming experiences I have had in a long god damn time. And sure, it's hard to pick the game up nowadays and have the same experience. I tried to boot the game up the other day and while I did bump into other players, there just didn't seem to be the same level of enthusiasm you saw when the game first came out.

  • Alright, so the playing part of The Walking Dead was deeply unsatisfying from the bland puzzles to the dumb shooting sequences. And it didn't help that both the console and PC version of the game had a slew of technical problems.

Still, when everything else about The Walking Dead is as good as it is; the cleverly constructed dialog system, the way consequences of your actions play out and an outstanding cast of characters, it's hard not to celebrate it as one of the best games of 2012.
