I just finished one of the greatest games ever made

"Leon Motherfucking Kennedy" - Brad Shoemaker

I finished Resident Evil 4 for the 1st time last night and I have things to say about it. Per the same as my last blog, I'm still working on my English, so please bare with me.

I guess I should start with context. Not only this is the 1st time I've played through Resident Evil 4, it's the 1st time I've played a Resident Evil game. I played the PS4 version of the game. All right, so now that we've got that out of the way, let's start talking about this beast of a game.

My initial thoughts are.... WOW. What a game. Playing this game with the context that it was released in 2005 makes it even more mind blowing. The game still looks pretty good. Obviously the textures are muddy, but overall the art design and the characters still hold up.

This right here is a kick ass shotgun
This right here is a kick ass shotgun

The shooting feels great. Every gun I used felt great and essential to surviving each enemy encounter. Part of what makes these weapons feel great is the feedback. Every time you land a shot on an enemy they either stumble, get a hole blown open in them or have some type of reaction. The guns feel powerful. To balance these powerful weapons, they're still able to strike fear into the player because of the amount of enemies being thrown at you, different tiers of enemies and a scarcity of ammo. Then of course, there is the elephant in the room. You can't move and shoot.

The movement in this game might turn people off, but I really enjoyed it. The deliberate pace that Leon walks feels good. Not being able to move and shoot is an interesting design choice because of what action games are, but it works because of the pacing in the game. This is an action game, but it's not a high octane experience that you can get from games that are released now. The enemies, for the most part, are coming at you slowly, so the deliberate walking feels fine.

Taking care of Ashley is surprisingly not bad
Taking care of Ashley is surprisingly not bad

Not being able to move and shoot is one of the surprises I had with this game. I expected a scary game going in. This game is not scary at all. It is 100% an action game. The scariest things that happen are when I'm out ammo and have to figure out how to eliminate a truck load of enemies while still tending to Ashley. Yet another surprise was the "escort mission" parts of the game were fine. Escort missions in video games have been bad in the past, so I was a little worried when the mechanic was introduced into the game. It works just fine. Most of them allow you to ignore her because you can just send her into a dumpster while you unload on the zombie people things. It was easy to control and I had no problems with it.

Look at this guy!
Look at this guy!

The most surprising thing was the set pieces. I had no idea this was possible on the Gamecube. The Lake, the trucks and other parts are surprisingly well designed. They're fun to play and are still really impressive. Playing this after having played three consecutive playthroughs of Uncharted 4 really puts this game into perspective. I don't know if this is true, but Resident Evil 4 might have had the Uncharted 2 impact on action games when it was released. You can see where the game hits its limits in some spots or where a Naughty Dog game would have made the cut scene and action seamless. The game also goes from a small scale to a larger scale really well. Walking through the village and then suddenly meeting the Lake Monster or El Gigante really makes this game.

If you're still reading this, you may have noticed I've only talked about how the game looks and the shooting. Well, that's because those are the positives. No game is perfect and this game certainly has some problems. The quick time events are just not fun and unforgiving. I probably died 15 times during my playthrough because I put the controller down while watching a cut scene and then suddenly a QTE pops up for no reason. It's jarring and doesn't really add anything to the game. Another negative is the characters and voice acting. This might a japan thing, but the dialogue is borderline atrocious at times. I frequently laughed at how Leon responded to the villains. It's ridiculous. The villains are just mustache twirling characters. They're creating a virus that mind controls people, i guess? I had no idea what their motive was until I read a note found in chapter 5. Are most Resident Evil games like this?

It's a cool game!!
It's a cool game!!

Ultimately though, those negatives don't really matter. This was an amazing game that still holds up really well. The gameplay, atmosphere and pacing make this game great. It's crazy. This game is awesome and can be held up to games that are released today. That right there is super impressive. I can totally see why people call this game one of the best games of all time. It makes me want to go back to play the Resident Evil remake and now Resident Evil 7. I understand those games are completely different, but there is a vibe that this game gives off that makes me want see how other games play out.

What do you think? Is Resident Evil 4 awesome? I certainly think it is and deserves all of the praise it gets.

This game looked amazing when it came out and made me glad I had a GameCube. It's still the best Resident Evil game ever made, especially because I like action more than horror so VII isn't my thing. I loved everything about it, including the Quick Time Events. At the time, it really fit the game and felt great to me. I don't remember the dialogue being that poor, but since I forgot it entirely, I'm sure I didn't think it was amazing either.

It was one of those games that was very replayable for me. Knowing the upgrade paths and getting the bigger suit cases, upgrading your gear, shooting someone in the knee and then suplexing them... it's great. I also thought the boss fight with Wesker was one of the best boss fights in any game and it fit that one really, really well. The only true negative I can mention about RE4 is that the upgrade path is absolute bullshit if it is your first time through. I spend time upgrading a pistol that was not even as powerful as an un-upgraded second tier pistol that I did not know existed until it was offered for sale. This obviously did not matter for subsequent playthroughs, but at the time it pissed me off.

Nice, I replayed it last year myself and indeed, it still does hold up. Just wanted to get a quick peak of the PC version I had from a Humble Bundle but ended up playing the whole thing. I had to skip the story though. I thought it was bad then but I just couldn't even entertain it this time. I wish the game had more colors. Visually, I think it would have aged better if it wasn't so monochromatic. Some of the interiors looked nice though with lightning flickering through the windows. The QTE isn't well done and it's even a bit more awkward doing them with a 360 controller. The game makes you want to jump right back in again w/ the upgrades but I always stop after messing with it for a bit.

Bought RE4 for PC back when it originally released but really couldn't handle the controls and other jank in that port. Bought it again in 2014 digitally, but then the game was plagued with de-sync audio and slow-motion like cutscenes plus random crashes, which together with the save system eventually made me stop playing.

...it seemed pretty okay from what I played, though! Maybe I'll grab it for PS4 from a sale and finally play the whole thing through.

The fourth greatest game ever made to be precise; I will never be moved from this judgment even if something better comes out. It'll also never be third. Always fourth.

@fredchuckdave: I see.

@liquiddragon@glots: The game plays reall well with a PS4 controller. I watched the Resident Evil 6 quick look after playing it and I was wondering "what the hell happened"?!?!

@zevvion:Yeah, I was kind of pissed about the upgrading path of the weapons too. Ultimately, I decided to just stick with a couple of weapons and maximize them. It's hard to understand what this was like at the time it was released, so I could see why the QTEs could have fit better back then.

It's a good game and it holds up well. A bit overrated, but that's ok. QTE's are jarringly bad though.

RE4 is still my favorite in the series and I just finished 7. RE4 combat is still the most satisfy in the series in my opinion this is one of the many reasons why 2005 is my favorite year in gaming.

Did the same thing October last year. Went from being a weird omission on my part to one of tge best experiences I've ever had with an action game. Sidebar: it's nuts how much Bloodborne and The Last of Us owe RE4, no wonder they turned out to be two of the most singular action horror games of the past few years.

You lucky duck, I envy you getting to play Resident Evil 4 for the first time. Thst some of those games that I wish I could erase from my mind and play over for the first time again. I finished VII recently and loved it but 4 is still one nod the best games ever made. At the very least it is influential on so many levels that you still feel that influence even today.

Glad to hear you liked the game over 10 years after its release. I absolutely adore this game, and think it deserves the praise it gets. The first time I played through the game was through the PS2 version on my backwards compatible PS3 (This was actually the first game I played on my brand new PS3, since I only owned a 360 at the time.) Resident Evil 4 is probably the best adventure game--meaning, the best game where you go on an adventure, like an Indian Jones movie--I've ever played. Reading your post actually makes me want to replay it, since it reminded me of so many awesome parts about the game. (I haven't thought about the lake sequence in years, but, DUDE that part is so good!)

Nothing. There may be some stuff in Bloodborne that one can mistake for a resemblance of RE4, but there is nothing in there that was taken as inspiration. Bloodborne is a lovecraftian omage and has its roots in Dark Souls which is inspired by Berserk. It's easy to see how one would mistake it for another horror genre's inspiration.

As for The Last of Us, it has a lot of similar camera angles and combat philosophy as RE4. Even pretty much the exact same lifebar. Doesn't feel like a copy at all though. I would sooner call it coincidental.

@zevvion: I see. The Last of Us was my game of the year for 2013, so I can see it. It definitely feels like it's own thing. I could see how the movement of Leon may be similar to Joel's. It might just be that's how influential RE4 was. It's just part of how you make a 3rd person horror action game now.

To me, RE4 has always felt like a mediocre to bad game. It's a discussion I've had over and over since its release.

I can understand some people thinking it's good. But the amount of people that call it an all-time classic will baffle me to the end of my days.

I wouldnt say the voice acting is bad, just the dialog. But everything about it has action movie cheese that escalates the further you go.

And I actually like the QTEs. (and QTEs in general) I might be crazy. But i'm glad you enjoyed it despite it having a bad story.

Completely disagree. Bloodborne parlays RE4's thematic obsession with the fear of a mob of enemies coming after you into its Lovecraftian homage, it owes a huge debt to RE4's atmosphere and tone in its first half. Both Hemwick Charnel Lane and Central Yharnam are full of RE4's influence, from the pitchfork-brandishing mobs that roam Yharnam's streets to the way the witches surround and corner you with those fucking brands if they get the chance.

Secondly, The Last of Us uses a lot of RE4's ideas with regards to weapon and encounter design. Druckmann literally cited RE4 as the reason why the Clickers have a one-hit kill, because before the design team went back to RE4, the Clickers were just really deadly. Apparently, chainsaw guy gave them the idea to make the Clickers completely lethal, which made them a much more compelling threat. Moreover, the way each weapon has reliable impact on the rate of the infected's approach is pure RE4; pistols will stagger regular infected, not Clickers. Shotguns will stagger Clickers, cut through regular infected. There's so much RE4 in The Last of Us' encounter design and ammo economy, which is why it manages scarcity so well.

You should play 5 next--it's arguably better than 4 in most every way. The only real downside is that it pretty much abstains from any of the horror moments.

I've tried to like and finish RE4 four times now: twice on PS2 and twice on Wii. I've never made it past the castle. I don't know why I can't stick with it exactly. It just doesn't grab me at all. I usually finish what I start.

Now to find the real beauty of RE4. Replaying it once a year (and/or doing a Professional run through). It's fun to challenge yourself to perform better in the game. You know what major encounters are coming now, and trying to prepare for them to conserve the most ammo/health possible is a fun minigame in and of itself. Or maybe this is all nonsense and I just personally love RE4 so much. Even the B-movie story and all of the one-liners almost every character spouts off at some point.

@adequatelyprepared I'm with you dude. Don't replay it every year but every few years I'll go back and see if I can make it through more efficiently. I almost always screw up the hedge maze, but otherwise I've gotten better over the years. First time through I barely made it through the game, it was rough. But it's a magical game to bring out during lulls or if I'm feeling jaded with more modern games.

The one thing that always holds RE4 back from being amazing is that it's unfortunately a Resident Evil game, and that baggage drags it down quite a bit.

Also

a) RE4 has no connection to Bloodborne

b) Bloodborne was inspired by Demons Souls

Yeah it is one of the greatest games of all time still. Also REmake, RE4, and RE7 are the trifecta of the series.

By the way, while we're talking about influences and stuff, the game that clearly was most inspired by RE4 was Dead Space. I still say Dead Space is spiritually the best RE5 we never got.

@frostyryan: Yeah, I remember thinking the same thing and really like that 1st Dead Space. But idk how DS1 would've been received if it was actually RE5. I think any game that's a follow up to RE4 would be harshly judged. Did you like DS2? My feeling on RE5 and DS2 are kinda the same. Not terrible but kinda hate them and super disappointing.

@liquiddragon: Dead Space actually instilled a sense of horror, tension, and dread, unlike RE5. So tonally I think it's perfect. Obviously the actual game wouldn't be RE5 since it's a space thing.

I really liked DS2 but not as much as the first. I don't think it's RE5 levels of dumb action but also not RE4 levels of perfectly blended action horror. DS3 on the other hand....yikes

It can be a little rough at points, but it gets better as you go along and get better guns + more comfortable managing the AI. I had a really hard time enjoying the partner at first, but I eventually learned to appreciate her being a distraction for enemies while also not being terrible at doing damage and also pretty good at staying alive. I'm sure some people will disagree with me, likely because it seems that some people just have worse luck with her AI overall.

I'm currently playing 4 Resident Evil games concurrently (Resident Evil Remaster, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil 7) because I'm an idiot, and I can say with much confidence that Resident Evil 4 is still fucking rad. On a side note, Resident Evil 2 is also still fucking rad, and 7 is pretty alright too.

It is an amazing game, one of the few games that played again and again and again, as far as I can remember I played through it 19 times on my old PS2, its the only game bar Vice City and Civ that I have kept me coming back for more. Glad you enjoyed it, make sure you play thought the extra Ada content that was added to the PS2 version, its good.

Got to play this when it eventually came out on PC. It wasn't the best port, but I didn't care. Hooked up my chubby CRT TV to the computer and used a knock-off PS2 controller. Playing through it like that was one of the best gaming experiences of my life, and also determined my first modern console purchase: the blood red Xbox360 RE5 bundle.

That is 100% a Dark Souls thing and always was. It's like saying Destiny has Mario influences because you can jump. We can distill every game down like that, but it doesn't work like that. The Last of Us' influence in RE4 is clear, but Bloodborne is just seeking.

I also recently replayed RE4, and yeah, that game is still fantastic. It was actually a little disturbing to see how much really small, really specific stuff I remembered from it (a lot of treasure locations, for example) but I guess I did play it a lot when I was younger.

The controls aren't quite as tight as they were in 2005 and I maintain that they could've cut an hour or so out of the castle section for the sake of pacing, but it's very much deserving of the praise it gets.
