Best of 2013

It's been a strange year for me. Unlike previous years I didn't spend most of my time or money on games, choosing to go out and be social instead. I know right? What time I did spend on games was mostly on League of Legends, Street Fighter IV, or mobile games on my iPhone or 3DS. I think it actually gave me a pretty cool perspective that I haven't had in a long time. Anyway without further stalling my GOTY

List items

  • I love me some social linking and I love me some tactics. Enter Fire Emblem. Fun and endearing characters, solid dialouge, and a wonderful tactics system make this the best game I've played this year.

  • I haven't played Pokemon since the original Gold/Silver, but I put 35 hours into this game in about a week. Tons of fun, lots of smart gameplay improvements, and a strangly engaging story,

  • I had really low expectations for DmC, probably complicated by my love of the franchise and concerns over this reboot. Those expectations were vastly exceeded. This game has some of the best action gameplay I've ever seen, stunning art direction, and suprisingly entertaining characters and story. It's not perfect, but it's the best reboot I could hope for

  • Another flawed AAA shooter, but one that left its mark on me. With the strongest overall presentation of any game this year, incredibly fun shooting combat, and a story I enjoyed quite a bit even if it has flaws.

  • GTA V is....not perfect. In fact it has a lot of problems. That being said, I put well over 30 hours into this game and enjoyed almost every minute of it. It's cool, silly, and fun. There are some dud missions, and the ending comes far to quickly, but overall I really enjoyed my time planning heists....like a lot....a whole lot. In conclusion I really like Heat I mean GTA V.

  • Lot of dreary on this list so far, but now it's time for something fun. Attack of the Friday Monsters is an incredibly charming game. As someone with nostalgia for old Japanese monster movies and Power Rangers, I really liked the feel and art of this game. Honestly, the actual game part is kind of whatever, but the core story and characters are so adorable I just wanted to hug my 3DS.

  • Speaking of depressing stories set in the former Soviet Union, Metro Last Light is pretty cool. I really enjoyed playing Metro 2033, tough I did not finish it. Metro Last Light improves upon the gameplay and builds upon the world. The stealth is particularly satisfying, something not many first person shooters manage to pull off. The story is decent enough, but the real star is the world. With fantastic visuals that set the right mood, Metro Last Light is a game worth remembering.

  • Possibly the most interesting game on this list and it does so much with such a mundane premise. I only played through it once, but I really enjoyed my time with it.

  • I don't like Zelda, but I really, really dug Link Between Worlds. It's simple, fun, and an appropriate difficulty.

  • Man....Last of Us tries hard, like really hard, and for a a lot of the game it actually does pretty alright. The opening is one of the best and most impactful I've ever seen in a game, and the ending sequence is a real solid finale. That being said, I think the story stuff in between is a little weak, and the gameplay, while it does its job, could be a lot better. Still, enough is done well for it to earn this spot.
