Oh Bioware, what are you doing?

I was originally going to write an open letter to Bioware, but I'm a nobody and they would never have seen it. Instead, I'm going to write a piece about why putting the likeness of Jessica Chobot in Mass Effect 3 is a terrible idea. I know they can't change it now, and I don't expect them to. But, man, what the fudge pop.

Okay, if you haven't seen it Bioware released a new video starring the real world cast behind the in-game characters. The usuals are there, Trisha Helfer, Seth Green, Kieth David, etc. There's one addition, so far, that seems out of place. That person is Jessica Chobot, and her in-game character looks atrocious. The resemblance is close enough to immediately recognize her, but it's so bad that she looks out of place among the rest of the cast. Her face seems saggy, I have a picture.

No Caption Provided

There are two reasons this is a bad idea.

1: While Joker, Seth Greens in-game character, shares a resemblance, he fits in with the rest of the universe. It isn't a close enough likeness that I'm taken out of the experience. While Jessica doesn't really have a saggy face, her character is immediately recognizable and I'm afraid is going to pull me down from the immersion high I'll be on moments before she enters the room. At least with Joker there's enough of a difference to where I have to stop and think about who he is in real life. With Jessica's, not even a second passes and I know, and the high is gone.

2. Her model looks grossly out of place in the game. There's something about her face that in all honestly frightens me a little. Jessica is a good looking women in real life, in the game I get the sense that she's 30 years older and smoked for as many. Nothing looks right about it.

I wonder who thought it would be a good idea to put her into the game, and why. Were they doing her a solid? Was this done hoping certain outlets might rate the game higher because they see a friends likeness there-in? I mean, I hope no one would do that. If your argument is “Many game industry people are featured in games.” then I have to again ask, why? Especially one that is so well known. Mass Effect is all about immersion, the dialogue system, the way it moves from conversations to action, everything is done to enhance immersion. When the likeness of a familiar face is injected I'm immediately reminded that yes, I am playing a game. All of the work to make me forget that fact is undone.

Come on, we already had an absolute fuck-fest of a thread about this already, writing a blog complaining about isn't necessary.

It is ridiculous all the hate she gets, I mean I don't like her, but people are almost acting like she is the Hitler of Video Game Industry.

She is a Video Game semi-celebrity doing a role in a Video Game, if she is absolutely horrible in the game then you can all go ape-shit, but right now a lot people just need to calm down.

That weird and stupid promotional crap like this and that ser isaac bullshit in DA2 makes me cringe everytime. Their games sell great on their own and everyone likes them (except DA2), so why do this desperate marketing that alienates a lot of people who just want to play a believable and immersive Mass Effect/Dragon Age game? Just stupid.

EDIT: It's also dumb because she works for IGN, the largest video game reviewing site on the internet. :o

Opting for Jessica Chobot when Olivia Munn is a clearly superior female "geek" icon, a huge misstep by Bioware.

I need to stop hearing about Mass Effect 3. It's making me very uncomfortable, all of this news.

I've got no idea who she is and even if I did... (voice) "acting" has nothing to do with writing or hosting shows. Just wait for the game to come out.

I think that's the main reason I don't watch AAA movies. I cannot, for the life of me, see characters. I just see actors.

I don't know who she is, so it doesn't bother me. I can understand your frustration though. The fact that they went out of their way to make the model look like her proves that they want people to recognise her, which in all fairness is pretty immersion breaking.

That character model is fucking ugly though. Uncanny valley, methinks...if I were Jessica, I'd demand they scrap it.

@Coreymw: Talking to Seth Green doesn't take you out of the experience.  What about talking to Charlie Sheen's dad or the girl from Chuck?

I will say that almost everyone's face looks a little messed up this time around.  Anderson looks more like Bill Cosby, Joker has weird glowing eyes, everyone's talked shit about Ashley's face.  It's like whatever they're rendering with can't get the cheekbones right.

I'm just gonna say Felicia Day. Bio (and EA) is doing everything to get as many hype as possible it seems to me...pull all the strings to get the most fans in. But by doing so the fans who bought their previous rpg's and fully supported ME1 when it came out seem to feel more and more left out...which I can understand and share.

Pretty much how I feel. Bioware/EA steered this franchise into a weird direction with transparent attempts to appeal to certain audiences (more action with every new iteration to pull in the Gears/COD crowd, more immature and raunchy dating content like it's the second most important thing in the ME universe after saving the galaxy). It just doesn't feel like an inspired product anymore but instead like something that was focus-group tested and business-decisioned to hell.

@jetsetwillie: Relax. It's just my explanation why ME doesn't appeal to me anymore even though I really liked the first game in the series (was already only luke-warm on the second game because of certain design decisions and differences in tone). But don't worry, I'm not losing any sleep over this, of course. I'm just not going to buy it. It's not like there aren't any other fantastic games out there.

It depends on what here actual performance is going to be in the game more than anything - and we've not heard it yet. I don't hate Chobot, in fact as an onscreen personality for IGN she's alright, but as people are complaining about, she does not have any Voice acting, or actual acting, credits to her name, and I think that's a valid complaint. I'll wait till I encounter her in the game till I actually form an opinion on her role. The same thing happened to Felicia Day in DAII's Mark of the Assassin - initially I didn't think it would work, but having played the DLC, she puts in a great performance as Tallis. There were times when she strode the line between acting as a character and acting as herself, but on the whole it was a good piece of casting. Frankly, I don't care who they stunt-cast, or whatever - as long as they put in a solid performance, it doesn't matter to me.

As for her appearance... yeah, the in game model looks weird. Like Felicia Day and Yvonne Strahovski, it'll probably be a case of it looking either really good in some angles, or flat-out terrible in others. I think so far - although once again, not seem much of Chobot/Diana Allers so I can't really say - Yvonne is the only 'real' face they've done that on the whole works.

Regardless of my feelings about Chobot, that character model has one annoying face. Perfect for a Shepard punch.

So first you argue that it's bad because you can't immerse yourself into the game because the character looks too much like Jessica Chobot. And then somehow it's also bad that she doesn't look enough like Jessica? And if the character in your opinion looks 30 years older than her in real life, then you need to get your head checked.

Personally I don't really mind the addition at all, no matter what the character looks like. As long as Jessica can do her job in the voice-acting department.

Ugh, is your life so boring that THIS has become a serious problem for you?

Seriously, is it really a big deal that she is in the game? It's not like she is one the main characters anyway. I also don't understand the hate for her. The only reasons I can think of is that people think it's cool to hate on IGN and attractive people.

That said, her face looks pretty weird in game.

Damn people let this shit go, Jessica's a fan of the series and relatively attractive (I think she's pretty hot) you haven't played the game or know what context she's in the game other then what the basic character outline says. This reminds me of the backlash Bioware got from some of you out there for Jack's debut trailer and many people were like 'I'm boycotting this game cause of her'

Play the game first and then bitch about it.

The character model I can look past, because not every character looks perfect. However, if her acting happens to suck ass, then that will definitely be a turn off. Depending on how often she's talking in the game.

If it doesn't appeal to me for whatever reasons, then I'm not buying. There's nothing silly about it.

Our hobby involves a constant stream of purchase decisions, I can't buy and play every game I want to play so I choose the games I want to play most. ME3 is nowhere near that list right now. That does, of course, not mean other people can't like it.

Yeah this game already has much more recognizable stars than D-list Chobot - and endless other games have too. This whole "issue" sounds like little more than standard internet RARR-RARRing to me.

If she does a poor job then by all means let her have it, but to think she shouldn't be given work based on the fact that some internet BioWare fans (Ex-Bioware fans?) think she's annoying is kind of crazy.

Darker, grittier, edgier, more blockbuster-action-movie-like, less subdued-space-opera-vibe ... I also miss the planet exploration that - while not being perfect - gave the game a great sense of vastness. ME2, in comparison, felt way more confined and linear. Everything that you find in ME2 are linear action-levels that only differ in size and visuals.

@jetsetwillie: Oh yeah, I forgot about the story which I liked way more in ME1, too.

I was really into it, that mysterious menacing threat that wipes whole galaxies, I devoured every single codec entry etc. Somehow for me ME2 shattered this feeling. Maybe it's the way the Reapers are portrayed in ME2, I don't really know. I just don't care about the story anymore. In the end they are just another Alien race with big ships and robots. Eh... It was probably foolish to hope for something more substantial and imaginative.

Gamers are a fucking weird bunch. Why is this an issue, exactly? Her character is likely going to be a very minor one in the scheme of the game. I don't see the problem or how this "breaks immersion." Sure the character model looks a little like Snooki but I'll get over it.

I'm still waiting to see what her character is like ingame. She could have a decent place as a side character on the normandy. Field reporter covering the war from onboard the ship that is for all intents and purposes, a negotiation mission. It might also just be really poor lighting.

Every main character face is facescanned from someone in real life. Nobody complained about Miranda being scanned and voiced by the same person, also nobody watches Chuck. :(
