Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

My second year of doing this!

This year's honourable mention goes to VA-11 HALL-A, which I almost put on the list but decided I shouldn't since it was only a demo/prologue. But what a promising demo...

List items

  • My Game of the Year by .. default, somewhat. By no means a perfect game and something I'd probably put in the middle of the list in a stronger year. Generic Fantasy Ur-Plot, save the world, blah blah, but amazing characters, side quests/character quests, and wonderful world-building. I would go drinking with Iron Bull and Krem all the time if I could.

  • So good. So pretty. The very first game I played on new consoles, and a wonderful introduction to the new generation.

  • I barely remember this--it came out in February--but I sure played a lot of it.

  • Two games on Vita on my list this year! This was way fun and addicting. I still go back from time to time to try to get new medals. And the flip between bullet hell and Metroid was really neat.

  • Oh, Destiny. I played hundreds of hours of you, and I'm still .. not .. sure it was good? In fact I think it probably wasn't. But it sure was fun to shoot those guns, and it made co-op multiplayer so seamless. Playing with dear friends who live in other cities while chatting over Skype made this a great 'hang out and play' game. I do hope they do more with it in the future, but .. yeah. It's hard to argue with the criticisms of this game.

  • I have played every Etrian Odyssey and loved them. I have the platinum trophy in Persona 4 Golden. This was basically tailor-made to me. I wish the plot was better and more Persona-ish, but the actual gameplay is the exact game I wanted.

  • Just straight up fun. And how do you not love the young space adventure Queen Victoria design?

  • It says something about this year that some of the most fun I had was getting these silly pen-and-paper puzzle games from the Japanese PSN store. But man, Kakuro is good stuff, and this game has the Kakuro you're looking for--and at 514 yen, it's cheaper than importing a physical puzzle book from Japan.

  • Honourable Mention of a game I haven't gotten to play yet but have seen enough of to know I'll like it when I do (and also I couldn't think of a tenth game I did play that should make the list).
