I couldn't play the full extent of the demo because I just had such a hard time staying interested.
The beginning had me intrigued, what with it all being a simulation and whatnot, but as soon as you're let out to explore and fight enemies any excitement I might've had just dissipated.
The combat... sucks. I think it feels tedious and dull, in a game where it seems like it's meant to be thrilling, but the combat turned out to be the least of my problems once I realised what the game was.
Prey, at least from its starting hour, takes inspirations from both bioshock and system shock in its setting, but as a game it's more like Deus Ex: Human Revolution being played in the Dishonored engine. Those are games I have liked before, but when I went back to them I wasn't super thrilled, and Prey is absolutely another one of those games, except--so far--it lacks an interesting mechanic like the 'blink' ability in Dishonored or the 'plasmids' in Bioshock, which just makes both the combat and exploration feel bland and uninteresting.
The similarity to aforementioned games is of course a very subjective topic, Prey is a game I have no doubt a lot of people will enjoy, but I just can't get over how derivative it feels, down to its controls, environment design, inventory and pickup, upgrades and the way you acquire said upgrades. (etc.)
I also have to say I disagree on the atmosphere praise, it feels too sterile and well lit, and the music just ruins it further, assaulting my ears at the mere suggestion of conflict.
I guess I have to wait for podcasts and streams to hear more, but phew, boy those first impressions are not pretty.
